The current consoles aren’t subject to easy, readily-available piracy like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were. Both of those machines could be modified to play illicit copies of games with relative ease, which had a measurable effect on the actual physical sales of video games. Either of the new consoles being cracked would be disastrous, especially for smaller markets like ours. And unfortunately, it’s starting to look like the PlayStation 4 has been cracked for piracy.
According to wololo.net, sneaky Brazilians seem to have figured out a way to clone PlayStation 4 games – taking them from an activated PS4, and making them work on other machines. This is different from account sharing, and apparently employs the use of a Raspberry Pi to clone the host machine’s NAND.
Brazilian stores are apparently selling lots of ten games for R$ 300 to R$ 400 (about $100 to $150), which is far cheaper than the $600 it would otherwise cost. Brazil, and other third world countries (like our own!) are traditionally a hotbed for game piracy, because for many, games are prohibitively expensive. The process leaves a machine, somehow, with two activated primary accounts – but allows those pirated games to run. And really, if this is all real, it’s only a matter of time until we see this happening in flea markets and other seedy dens of piracy here in South Africa. Sony is apparently already aware of this, and is issuing cease and desist letters, which leads us to believe it’s happening.
People are pirating PlayStation 4 games. It’s not a particularly easy solution, but if it requires little more than a $99 Raspberry Pi and a host PS4 loaded with digital games, it’s certainly a concern. Previously reported hacks were patched up in the latest firmware, but apparently this Brazilian hack still works. Hopefully it’s something that Sony can patch up (though it’s implied that they can’t), and at least keep the pirates offline. Without patches, half of today’s games are barely playable – and if people aren’t paying for their games, they should at the very least have a downgraded experience.

Out of interest, how long did it actually take them to effectively hack/crack/whatever the PS3 and Xbox 360?

The PS3 took quite a bit longer (for a proper, useable hack) than the Xbox 360 – which took about a year.

Look… I’m probably wrong and/or naive – but if you can afford a R5k console, why are you going to cheap out on the games? I’m not saying you wouldn’t look for a bargain, but you wouldn’t spend R5k simply to exclusively pirate games to play…

I’ve always wondered about PC gamers. Many buy rigs between R10 000 – R20 000 so that they can be mall master race this and that, but then they sit on their bollocks and wait for steam sales so that they can buy AAA games for R50 a pop

we spend R10 000 – R20 000 so that we can make a saving on games.
when you get 6-8 games in with your console, you’ve put in the same amount as the PC owners. everything after that, the PC owner is making a saving.
PC games also dont have to worry about their games being backwards compatible.
Anonqwerty
May 13, 2015 at 19:36
If I earn R1000 a month, and I save up for a year (excluding other expenses) and I buy a R12000 pc, it costs way more than saving for 5 months for a console and takes way longer.
Now, if I bought the console, I can still buy R7000 rand worth of games (7 or 8 games) before I spent enough to buy just the pc. So please enlighten me who is really making the saving. Maybe in the really long run. (This assumes the pc gamers don’t just torrent all their games.)
Mark Treloar
May 13, 2015 at 21:52
Because our hardware can evolve. Yours is stuck the way it is until a new console comes out. Consoles hold gaming back not allowing developers to go beyond the limitations of a console since its now become the primary market. Take Star Citizen for example. If it wasn’t for the versatility of PC’s it would never have been made.
Matthew Holliday

its a want, not a need.

Many many pc gamers also buy on release. It’s the guys who build 8k rigs who wait for the sales. Which is most of them. A sale is also a nice place to pick up a game you’ve wanted but don’t feel is worth that full price.

I agree fully, there is just nothing that compares to looking at a cupboard full of adventures that you’ve journeyed through, having those physical copies, the only issue with it is, how many have you revisited? Nowadays, I simply don’t have the time to return to old titles, not because there is an influx of good new games, but because my time for games have decreased substantially and with it the financing, so console trade ins would be my forte, just I’m mostly a PC gamer…

Before I started working on my Steam library I frequently revisited my older physical games.
Now that I have almost 200 games in my Steam library and less free time I don’t revisit my old games as frequently.

dont have all that much pride in my digital collection, the size is fairly impressive though.
but my physical collection, for games i really like, is like a badge of honour.
i dont go around saying “my collection is so impressive” but theyr on a shelf in full view and when i look at them im all like “those are some good games.”
that and i dont have the patience to redownload them at 15-60gb.
Captain JJ Browman
May 13, 2015 at 12:56
This is why I can’t fault using Steam. I have 250 games on Steam, none of which I have to exchange. And they cost me 10k in total. That’s 12 console games.
Fnuik
May 13, 2015 at 13:02
Is that 250 games excluding indi’s that only sells for about max R100 per game on console?
Captain JJ Browman
May 13, 2015 at 13:04
Of course it includes indies. The indie games are the best value for money of them all. Most are way better than the supposedly “AAA” games too. It still means that I’m getting more bang for my buck.
Fnuik
May 13, 2015 at 13:06
Yes but that scews your logic of 12 console games = R10k. We do get the cheap indie games on consoles aswell
Captain JJ Browman
May 13, 2015 at 13:07
Even if it were 20 or 30 console games, it’s not comparable.
Pariah
May 13, 2015 at 13:08
No, 12 console games does = R10k. There is no argument. R800 – R900 for one game. Do the math. Indies however cost between R120 and R240 on release, full price – and provide as much, if not more, entertainment than the R900 console game. And if you pick them up on sale? Then you can save 75% easy.
Fnuik
May 13, 2015 at 13:11
Yes but like I said (after a quick edit) we do get those same indie games on console as well. So If you reason that console games = R8/900 per game you have to use brand new AAA pc game prices and not the cheap indie games. Because I’ve never had to buy n indie game on console for R800. Actually for my indie fix I have ps+ 🙂
Pariah
May 13, 2015 at 13:14
Well here’s the thing. A 5 year old console game, on sale, is the price of a 1 month old PC game on sale. Same game. I’ve kept a watch, retail, console, Steam etc. This is always the case. A console game on sale never goes below R150, ON SALE, even if it’s 5 years old. And for the previous gen of consoles. And yet PC games hit that no issue. I’ve picked up AAA games for R150 or R200 a month after release on PC.
Fnuik
May 13, 2015 at 13:20
True, but when buying brand new the gap is not all that bad.
For me the choice of console or pc has nothing to do with prices. It’s all about ease of use. Personal preference above financial problems.
Matthew Holliday
May 13, 2015 at 13:22
the ease of use, when it came to consoles, made going for pc a fairly difficult decision.

I saw a guy walk out of a store the other day with about R18000 worth of merch… Now before we go “That must be a lot of games” It was a PS4 with about 12 games, given, they were all brand new games. In a normal household where a wife is present, if the husband had done such a thing, he would have his necessary man bits removed by either kitchen knife or blunt spoon depending on which said wife would prefer, so in SA I can see this happening, simply because it’s so expensive…

I agree wholeheartedly that piracy hurts the industry and playing pirated games without the ability to connect online for all the features really dampens the experience. But I think Wobbly’s article also raises questions through the true statement “Without patches, half of today’s games are barely playable”.
Whilst I agree that devs do deserve to be paid for their work, I disagree that we should have to rely on them to fix it after I have already paid for the game. Hype, preorders and the effect that it has on game development is also damaging the industry. I just wish that more gamers would have the sense to not pay for games until the devs fix them, instead of throwing their money at them like screaming fanboys.

Yeah, I had a 360 which was cracked (I was a poor student, don’t think badly of me please!) and I was able to go online and play with my friends all the time. I just had to ensure that after each XBOX update I went and got the box patched with the latest crack for the release. It was a hassle, but I was able to play online with the “legitimate” gamers. I hope this time round, Sony is able to come up with a way to mitigate this.

i pay for ease of access nowadays more than anything.
im not a 14 year old whos mommy wont lend me her credit card anymore.
pirating takes so much effort now… updates, broken games, prepacks, full games, repacks and all digital downloads of 35-60gb…
buy game on disk, install game, problems solved.

pfft, even their pirated games have issues.
have you seen some of the issues with the pirated copies of unity? its laughable, the game looks even less playable.

To be honest, my cure for piracy came when I realized I did not have to play/own every game the minute it released.
Jeesh. Now I cannot even remember the last time I pirated a game… My memory is failing me!

Terrible… I personally would never support such. Supporting an industry I love so much is of up most importance to me. These hacks can suck it. I’m here to keep the industry alive!

I remember the days when i had a “chipped” PS1, could play pirated silver discs(original was black) which apparently was the only games available in the small town i resided in at the time.

I wouldn’t be able to do the pirate thing anymore. Almost every new title needs a patch day one and they hardly work the way they are meant to until 2 or 3 patches down the road… I want my games to work properly. I don’t see that happening with the pirated versions.

I am brazilian and have never seen pirated PS4 discs myself BUT there are two options to buy pirated digital copies of PS4 games. On the first option, which pirate sellers call “primary”, you buy an activation code for around R$120 (US$40), log in the seller’s account on your PS4, download the game and play using your own account. On the second and cheaper option, which sellers call “secondary”, you buy a code for around R$50 (US$16), log in the seller’s account on your PS4, download the game but will play using the seller’s account only. On both options you can never delete the seller’s account, or the game will also be deleted.
I’ve never tried any of those options, since I only buy original games and have all of them on discs, but I have a couple of friends who buy pirated digital copies for every game. It is a lot cheaper, if you consider an original copy of a PS4 game costing around R$210 (US$70) in Brazil, but I am totally against piracy. I rather buy 1 game a month than buy 5 and support piracy.

The Hack was found in Russia and it made its way down to Brazil and to our shady “popular market” which is nothing more than street vendors inside one big warehouse each with their little stand to seem a more legit business lol, sadly the law isn’t enforced that strongly in there. I’m Brazilian btw.

The cult as its name suggests, was a group of intellectuals who came together to instill discipline in themselves, infiltrate government agencies, and create a new world order. However, the original illuminate was disbanded by the government of Balgaria, when all secret societies were banned, though even before then, strong internal problems were already leading the illuminate cult to termination. That was the 18th century Illuminati. The 21st and 20th centuries also have an illuminate sect which in words you are more likely to understand, is supposed to sign you up , pull you into their chain of command, give you enlightenment, and then, power, as you’ll be playing sinewy roles in the government. This article tries to bring to light, facts about the modern illuminate, and also helps the reader to join, and utilize the opportunities availed by the sect, which are enlightenment, enrichment, and empowerment. The illuminate make people rich, famous and astoundingly powerful. The illuminate, which means enlightenment, purges your mind of all vestiges of ignorance, backwardness and naivety. It brings you out of the delusions and illusions which you’ve been subjected to by numerous religious escapades, and when you are relieved of these non-propitious encumbrances, success becomes inevitable. They tarnish the name of Console Gamers, and makes the PC gamers looking like angels.

“Without patches, half of today’s games are barely playable”… so its okay that people pay 60 dollars for broken games on disc then?… when patches gets removed from the sony servers, the ps3 owners will be the first to experience this when sony stops supporting it… why dont you video games reporters kick up some dust, about unfinished games released and day one patches, and make a news article about this??… its a huge problem.
also if you dont think these pirates get the patches from the digital downloads like these brazillian pirates do, your complete wrong. they have everything… only one that get end of the stick is the paying gamers that buy these unfinished games.

Darn Brazilians got their priorities wrong. Give us a gameshark! (responsibly regulated for offline-only use of course, and without the need for CFW)
Sony can make a ton of money by releasing an officially sanctioned gameshark…
Speaking of Sony making money, if PS4 game piracy is lower than PS3, they should lower the games’ prices to compensate for the slightly higher game take-up rate (representing those douches that can afford games yet still pirate them)
