LucasArts choose the PS3 as lead platform

Yoda - LucasArts

Catching up on some late news I noticed there was quite an interesting story coming out of GDC that I missed.

LucasArts were talking about their upcoming game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and the pitfalls of porting games over to the PS3. They had originally chosen the Xbox 360 as the lead platform purely because they didn’t actually have any PS3 dev kits until early 2006.

However when it came to porting the game over to the PS3 they encountered many serious problems, especially with the vastly different architecture. Now that they have resolved that they are finishing of the game and getting ready for a Q2 release, they can start looking forward.

One of the most interesting statements made was the following.

Our next project will use the PS3 as the baseline, and then apply that to the Xbox 360

Now I don’t know if it’s a cultural thing, but did he just say the PS3 is the lowest denominator? When I hear that something is the baseline then that is the lowest acceptable point. It is something to work off and everything else should be equal to or better than the baseline. Else it’s a failure.

I guess you could swing this any way that you wanted but the most important thing is that the next PS3 title from LucasArts is going to be created for that console and should therefore be great.

This is a dangerous article Lazy, especially today.

Are you saying that the 360 has been the lowest acceptable point for the last year?

I don’t think so. I think it’s more of a: It’s harder to do on the PS3 so lets get that right and then make the easier transfer over to the XboX. NOTE: This is not an insult to either console!

I think in terms of game development it’s actually easier to tone things down than up, so that would mean the exact opposite of what you are implying. Personally, i don’t think it makes a difference, if a port is done properly then they should be identical.

Naa, the PS3 has a alot of power locked up within it’s Cell.
I guess it is just difficult to use, that is way some devs are opting to do it first on the PS3 and get it running sweet then port it over more code friendly architecture of the 360.

Hmmmm… It must be every devs nightmare to develop for two platforms that can earn you major cash but understand different languages. It’s like having 2 girlfriends but one speaks English while the other speaks Italian.

Abe, I don’t ever want to meet your girlfriends! 😉

Any which way you look at the article the good news for everyone is that it means that there are no longer ‘ports’ but rather ‘versions’ and the PS3 editions of games should stop sucking.
