Mads Mikkelsen is confused but excited by Kojima’s “crazy” Death Stranding

Death Stranding: It has beached whales, a naked Norman Reedus and what appears to be famed Hollywood director Guillermo Del Toro running around with a baby in capsule. Yeah, sounds just like a Hideo Kojima game to me. Whatever it is that Kojima and his crew happen to be working on, Death Stranding also appears to be quite attractive to the acting community. Specifically for the TV cannibal known as Hannibal, as Mads Mikkelsen popped up in the latest trailer and confirming his role as the antagonist of that wacky title.

Two trailers in, and Death Stranding is for the lack of a better word, utterly baffling. And Mikkelsen feels the same way. “It’s very intricate. I mean, you know [Kojima]. He’s a very brilliant man,” Mikkelsen said to Birth.Movies.Death via Kotaku.

I mean … the stuff he told me? I only understood some of it. There was a lot of ‘What?’ I have to see it before I understand. Because with Death Stranding, he’s creating something completely new.

While Mikkelsen hasn’t exactly played any of Kojima’s games, he has been able to recognise the signature design style of them, as Mikkelsen explained that the famed developer was essentially creating movies with his various projects. Something that anyone who played through Metal Gear Solid 4, can testify to. “But I also saw the trailer he had done with Norman Reedus, and I thought that was spectacular just from the standpoint of an actor,” Mikkelsen said of the first trailer that featured The Walking Dead actor and WHAAAAAAAALES.

The emotion, the feeling of it, the sensuality in what he does. Without even being a gamer, I was like, this is crazy, what he’s doing. I loved it.

Weird stuff then, and I’ve got a feeling that this rabbit hole only goes deeper. While Kojima has kept quiet regarding the plot of Death Stranding, he has made references to it focusing on the connections of life, the strands that bind us all. The game tentavely scheduled for a 2018 release, but I wouldn’t hold my breath as I’ve got a feeling that it’ll still be a while before we see what madness Kojima has up his sleeve this time.

  1. I’ll bet R10 now that it literally doesn’t make any sense, but everyone will pretend it does because they’re worried about looking foolish.

I think its mainly because over the years Kojima has championed compelling stories and characters. He is one of the very few who actually deserve to be called a AAA developer.

And the fact that a corporation screwed him over constantly

I have a theory!!!! So here goes: A tide of death engulfed the planet. Either man made or alien.( Head is going with man made). The tide created by so called corporation has genetically modified soldiers/agents that police and clean up the spillage. They can control reanimate things that have died to do their bidding after the consumption of death tide thingy. These agents are all born the same way(notice the similarity with the dolls stomach and marking on Norman’s character). Mads Character is drunk with power and uses the death tide to his bidding. Probably got Norman’s Character kicked off the force.

Decent theory, but there’s nothing in there that would make me go “what?!”. A bit too straightforward in story structure for an experienced actor like Mikkelsen to react the way he did.
I reckon there’s more complexity to it than that.
