Mafia II Graphics Comparison – PS3 gets short end of the stick again

Folks on NeoGaf have put a thread comparing the graphics in Mafia II on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 as well as linked to a YouTube video that does the same.

It’s a no-brainer that the PC version looks absolutely stunning when compared to the console versions, as is always the case but what about the other two? When you view the image comparisons, it is instantly very clear that the Playstation 3 version is lacking some visual elements and clarity.

Big steps have been taken to make multi-platform games look better on the PS3, as its something we haven’t discussed in a while, but why then are we seeing such a difference in visuals on the Playstation 3 yet again?

See for yourself. Images and video after the jump.

The comparison below shows the Xbox 360 version on top and the PS3 version below. I highly recommend that you click on the images to see them at full size as the thumbnail quality greatly diminishes the image quality of both.

Once quick glance already shows you that the PS3 version is missing all of the tall grass effects as well as a looking a touch blurry.

Here’s another comparison from a different angle.

While they don’t have these same angles on PC, these two images below should give you a good idea of just how much better the PC version looks.

… and finally, a YouTube video with a complete comparison, obviously viewing in High-Def is recommended.

So there you have it, if you want more images you can click on that NeoGaf link above. So tell us, which version will you be getting and why?

I thoroughly enjoyed the PS3 demo of Mafia 2. I love the setting, the music and it actually got my inner-Soprano excited, especially after I shot a police officer in the face and stole his cop car (sniff… pure bliss).

However, since I’m still boycotting xbox 360 (just waiting for my elite to die), I’ll have to choose between PC and PS3, but I’d just like say, “Stupid grass effects that look so pretty on the xbox 360! It’s red dead redemption all over again…”.

Hopefully the PS3 version is not a “complete balls up conversion” like Bayonetta. I can live with less foliage, but if there are serious frame rate issues or graphical glitches, than I’m getting it for PC.

Take a chill pill ppl. The demo was out to the press long before E3 and they’ve had plenty of time to improve both crappy console versions ( Way to pick on the PS3 again when both have frame rate probs, jaggies and screen tearing galore).

Accrding to these latest PS3 screens and this article from gamespot. The PS3 version looks better which means the 360 version also must have had improvements since. Wait for the final build ppl. Follow the links or stay ignorant your choice as per usual.

Obviously the PC version though is still miles apart from the console versions so if you have a good rig then thats the way to go.

Not picking on the PS3, just pointing out the obvious differences in the screenshots. The difference between what I’m doing and what you are saying though, is that I believe that we should always complain about this sort of thing, or it just keeps happening (not using Mafia as the only example).

People can call it picking on as much as they like, I just believe we should hold it up and ask why, so that the developers get better at brining the same overall experience to everyone.

Damn those PC gamers though… I want my Mafia II to look like that.

Just replaying the PS3 demo, and it’s definitely not as blurry or washed out as in the youtube vid (HD) or in the screenshots.

I’m officially calling shenanigans on this one, because it seems there’s been some creative post-production editing going on in those vids. The grass is definitely not as pretty as the xbox 360 version, but other than that it looks good (a few jaggies, which I hope they’ll sort out).

Anyway, turns out the PS3 version is also getting exclusive free DLC on launch.

I just found it hilarious that both demos were pretty rough around the edges and ppl pick out the PS3 just as i found it hilarious that some losers slow down GT5 vids to promote negative PS3 news and gaming sites post it up as news without fact checking.

Anyways no worries it looks like both versions will be improved drastically by the time it releases so everyone should be

It was ok but i didnt like the screen tearing especially in the apartment. The 360 version seemed to have more screen tearing. Some ppl were complaining about the Frame rate but i didnt have any issues in either demo. Hopefully that wont be the case in bigger gun fights or taxing scenes in the game. The PS3 version almost seemed to have zero AA though while the 360 version had fewer jaggies. Other than that i dont exactly stop to compare grass so i cant comment on that. The only other differences were the colours but thats always the case with every multi plat game.

Surely after all this time they should have improved the code and updated their demo, very strange move from them. Although I can understand that deadlines are a killer.

I wonder about the statement 2kczeck did and said that for mafia to run smooth and get the best feeling for each console some details like grass and clothes look better on xbox than ps3. Isn´t ps3 the little better machine both performance and graphics like? would the game lag on ps3 if the grass and clothes was as detailed as on xbox?

The PS3 is slightly more powerful because of its cell CPU Jaco but its a more difficult console to develop for since the Xbox uses very similar architecture to the PC. The multi platform games that look worse on PS3 are either usually because developers dont concentrate on each platform and optimize them individually or lead development on the 360. When they lead on PC or 360 then you get these ports that have slightly less details and in some cases frame rate problems. This is because PS3 has vastly different architectue to the PC and 360 and developers then struggle to port it across.

An example of a developer optimizing each platform individually is the new Game from ID software called Rage. It looks incredible on all platforms. An example of leading on PS3 shows the almost 100% parity between the console versions.

Xbox 360 exclusives vs Playstation 3 exclusives shows that if optimized Playstation games like Uncharted 3, Heavy Rain, Killzone 3, GOW3 and GT5 look incredible when compared with their Xbox 360 countrparts like Halo, Gears, Alan Wake and Forza.

The whole Cell procccessor being more powerful than the Xenon doesn’t quite cut it anymore because the opposite is true of the XBOX 360’s Xenos GPU vs RSX.PS3 exclusive games use Blue Ray space to compansate for lack of RAM( thats why they can take up to 50 GB like GOW3) third parties simple do not have the time the resources to do that as they have other platforms to focus on aswell. The XBOX 360 on the other hand has a superior GPU that allows them to take full advantange of the available memory for all Graphics an rendering related tasks. SO NO THE PS3 IS NOT MORE POWERFUL THAN XBOX 360.

    @Aussious

    – Firstly Blu Ray has nothing to do with memory. The only thing that Blu Ray allows is for more content and better uncompressed quality. Infact PS3 sometimes suffers longer load times if not installed because Blu Ray has a slightly lower read speed and has to read through more content than on a DVD.

    – Secondly you are right if you take the CPU’s out of the equation then yes the Xbox 360 GPU is slightly better than the PS3 GPU. The problem comes in the fact that you believe The Cell and GPU act on their own while in reality some of the PS3’s GPU workload is offloaded onto the PS3’s SPU’s of the cell. When developers tap into figuring out how to work the two together you get games as stunning as Uncharted 3. The problem when porting across a Xbox 360 game to the PS3 is this memory bottleneck. The developers struggle to port across what on paper looks like a memory defficiency. Like i said though when developers do learn how to use the powerful cell in conjunction with its GPU by either optimizing the PS3 version or leading on it they get amnazing results and amazing parity like Rage, Arkham Asylum, Dead Space and Vanquish.

I must say though, that while I agree with what you say about the PS3 being powerful because of what the cell can do, I still disagree with the entire idea that developers need to work so hard to optimise their games to work properly with the PS3. It means that most developers will never be able to fully exploit its power, and in my opinion that works to the detriment of the line-up for PS3.

Sure the cell is powerful, but with so much effort required to use that power, I think it was not a good move from Sony to begin with. Granted, when they do use it, it looks fantastic, but not that much more fantastic that I see it being fully worth all of the extra man-hours required by the developers.

Its kind of a catch 22 for Sony Nick. If they released architecture similar to that which the PC uses then it would have been easier to develop for but at the same time we wouldnt be getting games like Uncharted2 and GOW3. I think the middle ground was Sony providing better dev toolkits, support and all of this sooner than they did. They gave developers way too little time to figure out this new architecture when PS3 launched. Four years on and really its not that often that multi plat games dont have parity. 99% of the games that dont find parity are shit anyways. FFXIII is a perfect example of what multi platform developers can achieve if they arent being held back by the 360. Infact Xbox 360 owners should be happy when PS3 is the lead platform because i promise you the Xbox version benefits in many ways.

The fact is though that me and you arent developers and shouldnt give a damn about their headaches when it comes to PS3 development. Either they should (a) not bother with the PS3 version if its shit or (b) create a great multi platform game on PS3 like Rocksteady did and they will get my money. The only reason anyone ever brings up the headaches developers face when porting to PS3 is to fuel fanboy wars. I dont see why we defend developers that announce PS3 ports to make more money and then release shit versions. They arent the innocent party here. They want PS3 gamers money then they must create parity its as simple as that and we should stop making excuses for them and stop blaming Sony. I think Valve is the best example of this. When they saw PS3 as a tiny revenue stream they pissed all over it. Now that its got almost 40 million consoles, is an open network for apps like steamworks and has more gamers connected online that can play for free than Xbox Live suddenly its amazing and they have found these developers that can tap its power.

I disagree. 95% of the developers complaining about PS3 were PC only developers last gen or just make shit games in general. Now they try to make a quick buck because of PC piracy and then complain when their shitty ports get torn apart by gamers. I think not. There are way too many ppl in this industry using Sony as a scapegoat this gen and funny how the best developers in the world just keep quiet and make games that look as stunning as MGS Rising, Dead Space, Rage, Crysis 2, Devil May Cry and so many others. Ive seen it quoted from 20 different sources that the PS3 is easir to develop for than the PS2. Makes you think doesnt it.

Yeah, you make a good point there and I agree. Crappy ports on the other hand are a whole different story, and what was done with Mafia II for example, is just inexcusable. In this day and age though, they are paying for it because people are finally learning to vote with their wallets.

Well let me start off by rubbishing you claim that 360 owners gain anything from developers using the PS3 as the leading platform. FFXIII is a perfect example of this it looks absolutely crappy on the 360 as compared to the likes of 360 heavyweights such as ME2, Alan Wake, Gears 2 and third party games like Assassin’s Creed 2, modern warfare 2 and Arkham Asylum. If it was feasible for them to lead on the PS3 they would but its not. Further proof of this is in Square Enix dumping the white engine aka Chrystal tools (a PS3 based platform) in favour of a “multi platform” based engine. SONY made alot of bad business decisions when it came to the PS3 and MS capitalized on that. All the best looking games on PS3 are financed by SONY were as with the 360 they are Unreal Engine based. MS has started a studio that will build a 360 based engine from scratch then if those game don’t match up to the like of GOW3 then we can talk. As for the Blu Ray having nothing to do with memory and rendering on the PS3, I did my research I know what I am talking about. Here are few articles that substantiate my point…

    – I agreed with you that the Xbox GPU on its own is more powerful than the PS3 GPU mostly because of the 10MG EDRAM which helps with anti aliasing and framerate so i dont know why you feel the need to post 5 links to something i essentially agreed with. Also the next time you post links dont do it to freaking comments sections of gaming boards. At least post from a qarticle at a proper tech site. What i was saying is that the combination of Cell and its GPU is more powerful than Xenon and its GPU. Thats what im trying to get through to you that the cell does part of the GPU’s job and takes some of the load off and passes onto its SPU’s. Also texture streaming is a technique that can be achieved from DVD and Blu Ray so if this is the memory BS story you are going on about with Blu Ray then you are talking out of your ass again.

    – Also when MS actually build an engine capable of achieving what the Sony engines and in particular the Naughty Dog engine does then come talk to me about what and if and how amazing those new 360 games will be on 360 ok???

By the way Alan Wake and Modern Warfare 2 are sub HD games and dont exactly make your case any stronger. As for the other games on Unreal engine you do know that its a multiplatform engine right? Meaning Mass Effect 2 and Gears of War’s sibling Bulletstorm will look just as good on PS3 as was proven by Batman Arkham Asylum. If they were exclusively on PS3 they would probably look better too.

As for FFXIII that example would be like asking Naughty Dog to port a game to the 360 thats been optimized exclusively on PS3 when its 80% done . The devs were under pressure to get it out on time. If development started with the developers knowing that the game was multi plat from the start then leading on PS3 would have made for a better 360 version and the PS3 version would have been dumbed down even further….You do know that half the content was cut from the game according to the director right? Im guessing thats because Square didnt want the game to be on 6 or 7 DVD discs but had an arrangement with MS to have the same content as the PS3 version on the 360 version.

This debate though has turned into a fnboy fest so im done but feel free to make up more fairytales about Xbox 360.

We are four years in now and middleware like Unreal abd Cryengine are all over the world. Even Insomniac made their game engine and tools free a couple of years ago. I dont know if you remember that story. Shitty ports should be a thing of the past. I really think there cant be any good excuses anymore. Platinum was a new starup dev so we can forgive them with Bayonetta. At least they got Vanquish right. Also im not gonna give 2KCZECH shit for the grass story. Fact is this gen belongs to the Wii360 whole exclusives arguement is the only leg PS3 fanboys have 2 stand on, to conclude my arguement, men lie, women lie but numbers dont a few exclusives vs the masses of third party games is a none contest as most gamers prefer to play their third party games on 360.

I gotta be honest here… I really don’t know why people go so bonkers about Uncharted 2’s graphics. I mean, it looked good, but not thaaaaaat good. It doesn’t feel like a major step above the rest to me, just a good engine doing its job properly. It’s not like I started playing the game and though “holy crap I never ever thought I would see visuals like this during this gen” or anything like that.

And for the record, because people don’t seem to know this… the cutscenes were all pre-rendered, not real-time.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to argue or pick sides, I couldn’t care less, I just want to play awesome games. So just got involved with the debate because I find it really interesting to discuss things like this.

Trust me, I don’t need to waste my time looking for something to dig at. I love Uncharted 2, damn fantastic game. I just see it often being referred to as the most visually impressive game out there, and while it does look very good, it doesn’t seem that huge of a gap. Not like.. for instance, what Crysis did to everyone else on PC when it released.

You are right about the other games still. Conviction didn’t look that hot, I thought Alan Wake was really good looking, especially the lighting, but still running at lower res to make up for it. Mass Effect 2 was shit hot however, and with the extra time given to Bioware, I have a feeling it’s going to possibly look even better.

@Nick: Dont get me wrong i loved Alan Wake and even though Gears of War at 720P native might look better Alan Wake definitely still oozed more atmosphere visually. I enjoyed most of those games i listed also. I was just informing our dear friend that its easy to point fingers at multi plat PS3 games may for almost indistiguishable differences in the games 90% of the time while most exclusives themselves on his favourite box he calls the pinnacle of graphical capability on the Xbox. He will just ppost more links to comments in threads where his friend said this and that so ill rather end the convo because im also starting to sound like an Xbox basher now which was not my intention.

Frankly as far as im concerned Gears of War is the best looking game on 360 and not much comes close. Maybe Crytek will do something special to top that with its new exclusive.

As for the PS3’s best looking games its a toss up between Uncharted 2, GOW 3, Heavy Rain and maybe GTA5 when it releases. I guess it also comes down to art direction for some. In some scenes GOW 3 looks to top Uncharted 2 for me but overall Uncharted is still the pinnacle to reach in console ( Not PC ) gaming. At least until Uncharted 3 releases next year.

The train level is just about one of the most impressive scenes ive ever seen in a game when compared to Gears of War and Killzone 2’s paltry train scene set pieces. When i first saw war torn Nepal i thought my God Call of Duty has upgraded its graphics engine immensley and i was surprised to see that it was Uncharted 2 doing a war torn city 100 times better than Infinity Ward. The same with Tenzins amazing looking village which gets blown to pieces in a later scene. The gorgeous ice caves and amazing snow. I can go on and on. I think when Uncharted 2 was released there was a massive gap. It might have gotten smaller but just imagine what Uncharted 3 will do. I cant see anyone topping Naughty Dog this gen because they are incredible. If they made a 360 exclusive it would probably be the best looking game on 360 too for me.

Damn guys we really need an edit button!

That top paragraph was supposed to read that he keeps bashing PS3 multi plats while 80% of the exclusive games on his favourite box he calls the pinnacle of graphics are sub HD.

I think it may be down to my art background that I see things a little differently, and I think you just pointed it out as well. Especially when I review games I try to split any talk about visuals into graphics and art direction, I have seen some games running on pretty crappy engines do a fantastic visual job because of great art direction, and I have seen the exact opposite with crap looking games using good engines.

I think Uncharted 2 was a mix of a powerful engine, but more importantly, some incredibly top notch, high quality art direction, especially as you mention, Napal. Just gorgeous to look at.

Dammit, now I want to go and play it again, if only just to take a second gander at all of the visuals to see what I think I am talking about… lol.

You know I will say one thing about Naughty Dog, and I really mean it as a compliment, not an insult… is that they know how to use technical smoke and mirrors better than anyone else out there. I have seen them use some very clever simple tricks on some levels, and it lands up adding wonders to the visuals, and (once again not in a bad way) fooling people into thinking that some graphic elements are way more impressive than they actually are. To me that is making good use of your platform, any which way you look at it.

I’m trying with the edit button but unfortunately our rotating IP’s locally and my servers caching makes it incredibly difficult… will keep trying though

Speaking of Naughty Dog there was an episode of the Verge a couple of months back that interviewd a South African guy who works for them and he talked about how they recruited him to work on the art and character models if i remember correctly. It sounds like an amazing company to work for. He said they recruit the best talent from all over the world. Good to know that one of the Dogs is from our country.

I wonder what Jak would look like in HD. I mean Insomniac did a great job with Ratchet but you just know Naughty Dog would do something even more special with Jak. Its a pity we will never know though because they have created a monster and i cant see them ever working on anything other than Uncharted for the next decade and probably even longer. It would be cool if Sony approached Square Enix and asked them to create a collaboration between Crystal Dynamics and Naughty Dog to give us a co-op Lara and Drake game. Uncharted Raider for the win
