Manchester City enters eSports

Last month we discussed the possibility of Manchester United picking up an Overwatch team after a bidding war with Fnatic. While the outcome of this bid has not been announced yet, one prediction we made was that Red Devils’ rival Manchester City will soon enter the industry as well. That day has come as Manchester City have signed a new football player, but he will feature at Etihad. Kieran “Kez” Brown will instead represent Manchester City as their first FIFA star, something we can no longer call a trend among major football clubs as this marks the 8th acquisition.

“It’s exciting, it’s something new for the club and it’s something new for me.

“I’m going to live stream on Twitch, I’m going to be making videos for Manchester City’s YouTube channel and I’m going to be playing some City fans and representing City in future tournaments, which I’m looking forward to.” said Brown in an interview with BBC.

In May, West Ham signed Sean “Dragonn” May to their squad as the official FIFA 16 player, and now with teams entering FIFA, League of Legends, and possibly Overwatch, it’s really a no-brainer, according to Diego Gigliani, vice president of media and innovation:

“We will be a bigger presence at gaming tournaments, we will have more content through our digital channels and we will activate even more with our fans at matches and club events.”

It’s unclear yet where Brown will make his debut for Manchester City, but the major clubs interest in eSports will spark a revolution among British football clubs as the industry continues to grow.

Right now we can only wait patiently for the response from their biggest rivals Manchester United who seem a bit more interested in signing top football players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Paul Pogba.
