Mark Rubin thinks Carmack’s view on the Xbox One is inaccurate

I do say sir, I think you are mistaken

So when I was at the Call of Duty: Ghosts press event last week I noticed that Mark Rubin was being given a solid running over by an English journalist and was quite impressed at how good the journalist was at interviewing as well as how well Mark was at handling it.

One of the things I overhead in passing at the time was that Mark Rubin thought John Carmack’s assertions that the Xbox One is almost identical to the PlayStation 4 was inaccurate.

Obviously not wanting to steal some guy’s interview I never posted that but I see this morning that the interview has been posted and the interviewer was David Jenkins of the Metro in the UK.

The question that I heard being asked is in the interview as follows

GC: So when John Carmack and Shinji Mikami say the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are almost identical, is that something you could agree with?

MR: Hmm… I would say that’s a bit inaccurate but I wouldn’t be able to tell you any detail of why that’s inaccurate.

It was blatantly clear during the interview that Mark Rubin wasn’t allowed to say anything about the workings of the Xbox One and while neither he nor the PR guy on standby would elaborate why I think it’s quite obvious that when one platform pays you a ton of money to gain timed exclusivity you don’t go about saying bad things about it.

But it doesn’t take a genius to read between the lines in this interview and find out that not only is the PlayStation 4 more powerful but right now it is also easier to develop for and that makes for some painful reading for all the Xbox One fans in the audience. If you are wanting the graphically best cross platform games at launch then you are going to want to pick up the PlayStation 4. Which is lucky for us since that’s all we get for this year.

Now I’m still embargoed on the Xbox One version of the game but David did mention in his interview that the Xbox One version of the game is clearly a lot worse than the PlayStation 4 and to be honest I didn’t really see that. I’ve never been about the graphics in gaming though so possibly I just mentally ignored it but if you are planning on picking this up on Xbox One I wouldn’t start panicking. The PlayStation 4 is graphically superior because it’s 1080p compared to the 720p on the Xbox One. But that doesn’t make it the better version, there is more to it.

We have some awesome Xbox One footage that I can’t show you but it seems embargoes only apply to certain people as this YouTuber has had some footage up since yesterday and it is still going.. so that’s 200 000 impressions we can’t get. But to be fair to you, our sexy readers here is some Xbox One Call of Duty: Ghosts footage.

compare it to current gen, then you will notice the big difference. Saying it’s the same old COD crap is a very ingnorant statement just because there is in fact too many differences to explain.

CALL OF DUTY IS SHIT ANYWAY. XBOX ONE IS THE CLEAR WINNER FOR NOT WASTING EFFORTS ON IT. EXCEPT MARKETING, BUT THEY CLEVER BECAUSE COD WILL SELL THEIR CONSOLE. WHILE SONY FANBOIS WONDER HOW THEY GOING TO FIT MORE THAN A FEW GAMES ON THEIR PS4.

So what did Mark Rubin do for the gaming industry, absolutely nothing. Can he code no … can he single handed develop a gaming engine. Can he design and build a Space Shuttle going into orbit ?

Sorry Mark but Carmack has more skill and knowledge in his fungal invested small toe than you will have your entire lifetime.

Spec wise the consoles are almost identical the only real difference is the bridge that MS decided to put in.

We might as well get JuJu to start commenting on games and consoles.

As much respect as I have for Carmack, he really hasn’t done anything noteworthy recently. Mark Rubin is/was involved in active development for the next gen consoles while Carmack expressly stated that he hasn’t really but the consoles through proper benchmarks.

Also, it is not just Mark Rubin who has stated this. Isn’t it evident from the 720p that the console is either a) weaker or/and b)more difficult to program for?

I’d rather believe the opinion of current developers developing for both systems than Carmack who is shying away from game development it seems.

Mark Rubin is a producer he doesn’t code …. Carmack is busy developing ID Tech 6 and just became the CTO of the company making the Occulus Rift.

How is he shying away from development ?

Go ahead and listen to Mark, this is the problem with the gaming industry people listen to execs rather than the actual developers.

I know Mark doesn’t code, but obviously he is involved in the development process, which includes coding.

It feels to me (purely my own speculation) that Carmack’s heart isn’t into making games and game engines so much anymore because of his rocket and Oculus Rift endeavors. I’m not saying the guy is irrelevant, I’m only saying that he isn’t as relevant as before.

You are aware that the space ship that he build was completed about 6 years ago ?

The guy is busy developing a new gaming engine I cant see how anyone in the industry can be more involved than that.

He isn’t just making a standard engine they are using voxels and raycasting in the new engine that has never been done before and if it works will change how the industry develop engines in the future,.

“id Tech 6 is an upcoming OpenGL-based game engine under preliminary development by id Software, which will tentatively follow id Tech 5 for id Software games following Rage and Doom 4. It will work by raycasting the geometry represented by voxels (instead of triangles) stored in an octree.”

I don’t think I could ever judge Carmack. Molyneux yes. Remember Black and White 2? While decent it was nowhere near the innovation he made out the game to be. Carmack is one of the strongest minds I’ve seen yet – much of what he’s said has come true, especially about SoC systems growing in dominance in the last year.

I agree Molyneux is going a bit looney lately, there is only two people I can never judge in the gaming industry and that is Carmack and Gabe from Valve. They both have done so much for gaming and really understands the market well.

Actually rage was amazing other than the OpenGL drivers that they had to rush to fix as it was lacking. Rage is still one of the best looking games out there. Do yourself a favor get yourself a cpu and gpu usage monitor and start up rage and see how well it utilizes the devices and compare it then to anything on the market.

After AMD and Nvidia fixed the opengl drivers because they had a lot of bugs due to opengl not being used much anymore.

You shouldn’t rely on buzzwords … or at least do research before you comment …

“But that doesn’t make it the better version, there is more to it.”

So…it runs better, but isn’t the better version?

Let me put it this way, in an industry where developers are more interested in parity between versions, what exactly are you expecting to see in the One version, or the PS4 version that’ll decide which is the best version?

And, I’m trying to roll back the clock to prior generations, but I don’t remember reviewers, analysts, developers or publishers being this wishy washy with their conclusions. I seem to recall that whatever version ran better, was deemed the better version (Go figure, amazing logic there). So, what’s changed, and be honest. We know very well this has nothing to do with making the industry civil, because we know very well that news, bloggers etc… thrive on divisive and inflammatory topics. It boosts the comments section, provides ad revenue for clicks etc..

So, what’s changed? Because from where I’m sitting, the only change is whose hardware is currently favored by the majority.

Let’s see someone who has far more knowledge in his life-time than a younger generation………………

I’m ok with Xbox One, Ps4 but seriously there not that much different. Sure one has a big more power than the other but the end result is both are not upgrade-able, it’s not as if I’m going to upgrade the Ram on both consoles.

Plus John Carmack deals with these sort of programming on a daily basis, while Mark Robin is a slacker that is already known for re-using old material, trying to pass it off as new with CoD while killing innovation so how on earth can Mark be right in any remote way? wtf!
