Marvel unleashes the Age of Ultron next year

Ultron is coming. For years now, writer Brian Michael Bendis has been building up for the latest event in the Marvel Universe, starring none other than the big bad robot himself, Ultron. The android antagonist has been trying to conquer the world ever since he first had daddy issues, and in the Age of Ultron, that’s just what he does, as he lays down some heavy destruction and death. And that’s just the first issue.

Speaking to IGN, Bendis elaborated on what people could expect in the upcoming event that arrives next year March. Starting with a rapid shipping schedule, the ten issue series will ship between March and June, with the first half of the issues drawn by Bryan Hitch, and Brandon Peterson and Carlos Pachecos handling the other half.

“Ultron, who is one of our biggest villains, finally fulfills his destiny, which is to accelerate his super-intelligence and does what he always wanted to do, which is take control of earth”, Bendis said of the super-villain.

And he does. From the very first page, the Marvel Universe has been overtaken by Ultron. It has been changed. It has been altered. There have been shocking amounts of death and devastation and casualties in the Marvel Universe.

The event itself, won’t be a finale to Bendis’ run on Avengers, which over eight years, has covered other big happenings in the Marvel U. “Much like Secret Invasion or Civil War, it started in Avengers, but it was always meant to be a Marvel Universe book.”

It stars everyone. It’s not just the Avengers. The Avengers is always an awesome place to tease or start a story like this because there’s so many elements to the Marvel Universe and the Avengers. It goes to different places. But this was always a Marvel Universe book.

It stars the Avengers, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Moon Knight, Black Widow. It goes all over the place and literally goes all over the world.

But what’s really odd for this mini-series, is that it’s going to be publishing at a breakneck speed. After all, if you’ve got Bryan Hitch doing the art, you usually have to several months for him to finish a massively detailed panel, let alone an entire issue.

“When me and Bryan Hitch started working on this book, me and Tom talked about how we could offer a Bryan Hitch experience that was very different from the others” Bendis said.

Sometimes with Bryan Hitch you get a couple of issues, and then you’ve been trained over the last decade to wait for the rest of them. Wouldn’t it be nice if we don’t solicit this book until all of the artwork from him is in? So we can give a very unique Bryan Hitch experience by having the issues ship very quickly and in an explosive fashion that really accentuates the story.

Bendis has also described the art of Age of Ultron that Hitch provided as “the work of his career – just absolutely gorgeous. Every page is absolutely stunning.” Readers lately, have also been wanting event stop wrap up quicker as of late, because after all, who has ten months to see if something can stop the Juggernaut’s bowel movements?

“We came up with a schedule that allowed us to tell the whole story in a smaller batch of time and get to the stuff that happens at the end – which is really kind of shocking and big, for us and the Marvel Universe” Bendis explained of the quick schedule.

In fact, our last pages are so shocking that there are literally only six people in the entire world that know what they are. The artists don’t know what they are. There are some people on this phone call at Marvel who don’t know what they are. They’re some of the biggest secrets we have at this company. Some of my friends in comics are going to hear me say this and call me up and say, ‘What is this?’ And I’ll be like, ‘I’m not gonna tell you.’ That’s what a big secret it is. This allows us to get to that as soon as possible.

Something happens in this story. There’s a break in this story that’s pretty seismic that allows us to split the story between two other artists with similarly bombastic but, at the same time, specifically different voices. Those artists will be Brandon Peterson, who I’ve been doing Avengers with and been having an amazing time, and Carlos Pacheco, who I’ve been a fan of since he’s been drawing.

Coming hot on the heels of the Marvel Now! relaunch, Age of Ultron is looking pretty good. From the Avengers to the schizophrenic adventures of Moon Knight, Ultron has slowly been creeping in, and seeing how his reign of terror is finally ended, should make for an interesting series.

And a pretty one at that.
