Mass Effect Andromeda won’t feature returning characters from the trilogy

Andromeda

Mass Effect Andromeda is a whole different kind of Mass Effect. The trilogy took place in the Milky Way galaxy, our home galaxy, but this next one is taking place many many light years away. But our awesome companions are still going to turn up there, right? Well, no.

Over on twitter, it was clarified that we won’t be seeing any familiar faces in Andromeda:

But don’t despair just yet. Minor characters from the trilogy might pop up seeing as they haven’t put every character in the Andromeda build yet. Also, even without characters we know and love/hate/have forgotten, it will still feel familiar. Races we know will be present, as will the Mako. We are promised that the game will feel like a Mass Effect game to fans, even if there aren’t known characters.

This works for me. I fell in love with my team in the trilogy, enough to feel genuine emotions when they were in trouble or actually died. While I’d love to see more of them, it’s also time to move on and make new bonds with new characters. Plus, it just doesn’t make sense to have Wrex or Garrus magically appear in a whole new galaxy. Better to let them stay home while I make new friends and forge a new legacy in a whole new galaxy.

That said, there had better be plenty of Krogans to love in this Mass Effect.

This was established a while ago though. Even so my heart skipped a beat when the article appeared. Made my Friday yay!

So, they can more or less do as they see fit i the universe then. New aliens, new social and political paradigms.

So, not Mass Effect then? Just borrowed a few ides and stuff from the Mass Effect series.

Nah. Think of it in terms of ST: Voyager and ST: TNG. Same universe, different stories being told, referencing each other and so forth. Still very much Star Trek

You make sort of a point. But ST: voyager is still a federation ship, with federation ideals and stuff. Humans are in this galaxy and unless you set the new game FAR in the future, that will still matter a lot.

But a whole new galaxy seems a bit of a cop out.

well the N7 insignia did show up on in the teaser trailer, so its still a part of the existing human network.

we dont know enough about the new story/universe to make any assumptions about it yet.
a cop out would be fine though, if this turns out to be crap, id rather they ruin a new universe, rather than spoil my memories of the shepard saga.
creating a new story to match with your decisions from the previous trilogy would be far too much to ask.

I wonder which character they have planned for the day-one DLC?

I just wonder if your decision in the finale of ME3 will have any impact on Andromeda

I doubt it. I think for an overall universal bases it would. Like everything started from scratch and many years later they still rebuilding. So i think it would be something like that.

Yeah I understand that this will be many many years after the events of ME3 but one of the endings had major physical changes to organics/machines. Wonder if they will consider something like that with the new ME

red option would throw them back into the stone age
while the blue option would keep them about the same
and the green option would leapfrog them 1000 years into the future.

for any continuity to be had from the 3 endings, it would have to be thousands of years in the future, or be happening just befor the reapers showed up.

Yes! Shepherd’s offspring will be shown colouring in with either a blue or red crayon somewhere in the game…

There was green? Sorry. I am sort of colorblind, in that I do not remember detail all that much. Picture my dad’s face when I went “Mom’s a GIRL????”

would be too difficult to impliment it on any meaningfull level.

can you imagine trying to create continuity between simply destroying the reapers, keeping them as pets or fusing with them into some kind of demon cyborg?

Makes sense. If alive at the time, Garrus, Wrex, Liara, Ashley, Jack, Joker – all have major roles to play in the rebuilding of their races after the war. I would love to see the new characters they come up with. Garrus, Wrex and Joker were awesome! I just wish we could be non-human…

liara, ashley/kaiden & joker showing up would actually be viable, since liara is the shadowbroker, ashley/kaiden are spectres and joker has the fastest ship in the galaxy.

but yeah, also wanted to be a non-human. ME3 MP was great in that sense, giving you an opportunity to play as other races and unique classes.
i mean, its not like bioware havent done it befor, DA:origins is still considered by most to be the best of the DA series and you could choose your race in that, which had a similar scale to mass effect.

Hmmm did not think of it that way…except Kaiden. Mofo didn’t survive any of my play-throughs. The one where he made ME3, I made sure I wacked the little whiner!

kaidens performance in me3 was better than his performances in the previous games, but the loyalty mission did feel like more of an ashley mission.
i did prefer ashley way more though, she was a proper hotty in ME3, which was a good change, she was way too butch in the previous ones.
that and her hangover scene on the normandy was so good that it was almost worth saving her everytime for that alone.

His performance was better, but I had a grudge. I was busy romancing Ashley with my soldier on my first ME1 play-through. Made tactical sense to save Kaiden because he brought diversity in skills to the team. Never used him because, well, Garrus and Wrex. I was paused for 30+ minutes making that decision. Never forgave him for “taking” Ashley from me. He dies EVERY TIME now hahahaha

Noooooooooooo!!! How dare they!!!!!! They could have added them in! Maybe not as main characters for the main story, but possible cameo sideline missions!

No Talimancing then? ;__;, guess I shall just have to do another playthough to get rid of the itch.

Speaking of which, anyone who doesn’t have the complete trilogy should get it now on PSN as it is only R220, as opposed to R1020.

I bought all of them as separate games but having them in a bundle at that price is tempting… In case I lose the discs somewhere or something… 😛

maybe I’m missing something, if they are basing this game in Andromeda how are they planning to explain the existence of Humans, Krogan, Turians, *ahem* Asari and such in a galaxy so far away?
