A massive Destiny update will drop again in 2016

What does the future of Destiny hold? Probably more emotes, because those silly dances sell like protein shakes next to a gym. HA! But for reals, Destiny is starting to become a more reactionary type of game. As a massive sandbox to to fire high-velocity facial piercings into enemy faces, Destiny needs quite a number of resources to keep itself going and its community interested.

And the current DLC model just wasn’t that sustainable. Sure, House of Wolves and the Taken King got players back into the game, but the challenge here is to keep them locked in for a longer run. And that’s where events do work. Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris are proof of this, and the Sparrow Racing League is adding to that model as well.

And while nothing concrete has been outlined for the rest of year two either, you can certainly expect more event-based content on the way.

“The updates described above are all currently slated to hit across Winter and Spring of 2016, with more to come, as well,” senior community manager Eric “Urk” Osborne wrote on the Bungie Weekly Update.

The first of these early 2016 experiences will be on a scale close to Festival of the Lost. The second will be far larger than anything you’ve seen since the release of The Taken King. There’s also another significant update to the world and sandbox planned in this same window.

As Osborne explained further, the standard formula of delivering every couple of months has been largely ditched for now, in favour of more frequent updates and events. “This year, the plan is to deliver new experiences at a faster clip,” Osborne explained.

To that end, the updates described above are all currently slated to hit across Winter and Spring of 2016, with more to come, as well.

Some of that content will be announced. Some of it will be a surprise. But don’t Bungie to reveal anything about content that is in the deep side of the development pool. That includes the current silly season, as the Sparrow Racing League is the sole holiday event for 2015. “I’m really excited about what’s on tap for next year in Destiny, both the events and the bigger ticket content and activities,” Osborne explained.

We’ve already talked about having a sandbox update each quarter, but there’s more on the way, too. Please give us some time to sort the details, and lock down the fun stuff to come.

I’m just hoping that Santa Xur hands out free Year Two Thorns on Christmas day. That would be a treat and a half.
