May’s Games with Gold won’t sell consoles

People may moan about Games with Gold’s offering – the games haven’t always been stellar, but at least they expand your library, right? Well, I think the issue this month is that none of these offerings would make we want to buy a console. Or really even play on my console. But here they are!

In the Xbox One corner, we have CastleStorm: Definitive Edition. Valued at $14.99, it’s a genre mash-up combining medieval warfare with 2D physics-based destruction.

Prepare to be challenged (in a good way) to manage a lot of battlefield elements at one time by controlling the battle in real-time, bombarding your enemy’s battlements with ballista-projected artillery, managing a fearsome ground attack, and casting powerful spells in epic conflict between Knights and Viking warriors! CastleStorm: Definitive Edition features a story-driven single-player campaign, a custom castle editor, online multiplayer and co-op modes, and more. Building castles and knocking them down has never been so much fun! In addition to the original CastleStorm campaign, the Definitive Edition includes two expansions, “From Outcast to Savior” and “The Warrior Queen” for the most complete CastleStorm package available.

If you didn’t already grab it last month, don’t worry – Pool Nation has been extended for another month. Any of you using your Xbox One to smack those balls together?

In the Xbox 360 corner, we have a tag team of Mafia II and F1 2013. Back in 2010 when Mafia II was released, we reviewed it and gave it a rather high score. While games like GTA V and Sleeping Dogs have since blown it out of the water, Mafia II is still ideal for those who want to pretend to be a 40s/50s gangster, complete with driving classic cars and robbing banks. F1 2013 was praised despite being the only game of its type – it’s easy to be the best when you’re the only one. Still, if you’re looking for a racer this month and you’re not willing to dish out the money for a real driving simulator, F1 2013 could help satisfy the vroom vroom urge.

This isn’t a bad selection of games, but it just doesn’t amaze me. The Xbox One game could be fun, but isn’t something I was looking forward to playing and the Xbox 360 games can’t compare to other titles that you could find in the bargain bin at this point. Thanks for trying Xbox, and free games will always be awesome, but I’m now overly impressed.

I love the Mafia games, but still think the original Mafia was the far superior game. But still – Mafia II is a good game and definitely makes you feel like a proper Mafioso.

Pool nation was kinda fun for a while at least. Not that I would buy it, at all.

    Sigh.

    but I’m now overly impressed

    Yeah, me too.

Does CastleStorm suck? Will probably go into the “download and never play” category then! ????

No it doesn’t. It’s pretty good actually but seeing as you frown upon indies…..

Xbox 360 comes up tops as Mafia 2 and a F1 game beats one good indie game and a pool game in my eyes.

Will try it, and must admit Lifeless Planet has got me intrigued too. But then again, Rayman Legends for March and April’s Rayman Legends where you play as a princess did nothing for me….

It’s okay for them to have a little break – Games with Gold for XBOX 360 has had a stellar last two months!

Indies Indies Indies, looks like both Games with Gold and PS Plus offerings for current gen are stuck on Indies. Thankful for EA Vault for exactly this reason!

Just saying that if either Games with Gold or PS Plus had offered what EA Vault has offered so far people would’ve been ecstatic!

Maybe if they offer something new every month? Currently you’re paying a subscription for the same 8 games every month.

Nine months in and we have 10 games in the Vault, so that covers the “something new every month” part. Value for money wise EA Vault comes out tops easily. Just thankful I was given a choice to participate (Unlike that other company that decides for their customers you know????)

right you are ten. Seven sports, peggle, Bf4 (like anyone who plays that didn’t buy a copy, season pass included), PVZ (which is actually good) and a NFS game which has long ago lost it’s status as a top racing franchise. Basically this for fans of sports games. Instead of buying the same bunch of titles every year you can own them all for $60 a year. Except for golf. That’s the only true value I can see.

For R582 a year! ???? Ignoring all the sports games, this means up to now you got NFS, PVZ, Peggle 2 and BF4 for R480 which is still a bargain! ????

            April 30, 2015 at 10:29

I have PVZ. And it was R200 I think? And I dont need to pay every month to play it.

No, actually you do need to pay every month to play it!????.

            April 30, 2015 at 11:11

So you pay for one month download all ten games and you can play them forever?

            April 30, 2015 at 21:42

I cannot disagree more with your opinion. PVZ is brilliant but ancient and the rest are just plain EA kak. Soz man, don’t meant to be a bitch but I just don’t see ANY value in the EA proposition when compared to $ony or M$’s offering over the last few months even with the current weak May offering from them.

    LONG LIVE HEALTHY COMPETITION!

I remember back in 2007 where all that XBL gold gave you was online access to play with your friends with a odd free Doritos game every other Christmas. FFW 8 years later, now you get free games each month. Sure its not as good as Sony’s offering but still GREAT!

Thanks Sony! You da real MVP!

I don’t think a free games service is there to sell consoles. Xbox Live on the other hand is system seller itself.
