The survival horror genre – outside of some excellent indie output like Amnesia and Outlast – has taken a few steps backwards of late. Games that one fell under the “survival horror” banner have, to their detriment, become more action-oriented bulletfests.
In the AAA sphere, there are to great big hopes right now. Creative Assembly’s Alien: Isolation (which is shaping up to be excellent) and Tango Gamework’s Evil Within. That game, of course, is headed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami – so there’s a great deal of hope that it might help return the genre to its roots. From everything we’ve seen, it looks pretty damned creepy. Here’s some new footage out of PAX East, showing one of the game’s villains, Boxman.
“Detective Sebastien Castellanos and his partners are called in to investigate a gruesome mass murder. After witnessing a mysterious force slaughter his fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When the video opens, he finds his world has been turned upside down. Fighting for survival in a world where hideous creatures wander among the dead, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel who or what is behind this unimaginable evil.”
The Evil Within is coming to scare the bejeesus out of your Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, or PC in August this year.

Won’t touch it with a pole my friend!! Resident Evil 2 is my ultimate game but playing it at the age of 12 or so did really not help my fear levels all that much!!

I don’t scare easy, but Outlast makes me change my shorts. Although it’s a FPS they made it so you can look behind you while running then you can see how close the monster is on your heels that’s chasing you
