Meet Overwatch’s new DPS/support hybrid hero, Baptiste

Like seemingly everybody else around the world, for the last couple of weeks, just about every single time I turned on my console, it was to load up Apex Legends. Respawn’s incredible free-to-play battle royale game has taken the world by storm and rightfully so as it completely revitalised the genre with some really clever additions. Some of those additions were arguably taken straight from another game that not too long ago also took the gaming world by storm: Overwatch.

Blizzard’s competitive arena shooter is still going strong, despite strong opposition like Apex Legends, thanks to a steady roll-out of new heroes to play with. We’re just a few months removed from the inclusion of DPS hero Ashe, and it’s just about a year since we got support/tank hybrid Brigitte. Now Blizzard is dipping back into that latter crossbreed well, as they’ve revealed the newest hero, Baptiste, a Haitian combat medic that will be both damage dealer and healer.

Baptiste had actually been teased by Blizzard last week already, thanks to a mysterious tweet on the official account. The tweet took the form of “classified” intelligence hack (probably by Sombra, doing her double agent thing) and led to a communique from “Cuerva”, a Talon member who seemingly trained the young Baptiste before the latter saw the light and got out of the nefarious organization. Or at least is trying to get out as it seems Talon is taking a page out of the “Vatos Locos”* playbook and won’t let Baptiste go without some violence.

There’s been no official breakdown from Blizzard of Baptiste’s abilities yet, but rumour has it that he will be gadget-based and play very differently to Ana, the game’s other DPS/support hybrid hero. We can probably expect some more information very soon as after the fiasco of Sombra’s drawn-out reveal, Blizzard has tended to drop new characters on the game’s public test realm servers rather quickly after showing them off for the first time.

*If you understood that “Vatos Locos” reference, then congratulations you’re an old person like me!

Well, yes. But clearly not the numbers it once had. Blizzard’s recent balance changes and the lack of variety in their annual seasonal events have soured the community quite a bit, but hop on at night and you’ll still pretty much always find a full game really quickly.

It does need a bit of a something something to make it feel fresh again.

The comp scene never quite took off in comparison to other games.
And seasonal events, even good ones, wont be enough to have a lasting effect.
