Mega Man Legacy Collection brings nostalgic lemon-slinging to new platforms

It wasn’t long ago that I joked about Capcom bringing its fabled blue bomber back – by way of a damned cartoon. It’s been years since Capcom themselves have released a game featuring the little lemon-slinging robot boy who could, and it would be lovely to see him back on screen, making people want to throw their controllers at walls in frustration. Well, Capcom’s finally releasing a Mega Man game. Or rather, a collection of them. Announced yesterday, Capcom’s Mega Man Legacy Collection brings the 6 NES games to modern platforms.

Mega Man Legacy Collection hits Xbox One, PS4 and PC later this year (20XX), bringing a sort of remastered bundle of the first 6 Mega Man games to a new generation of gamers – or likely, a bunch of nostalgic old farts like myself.

The games will be running on a brand new engine, though feature the exact same gameplay we’re all used to. For some reason or other, they’re making the 8 bit games run at 1080p, and are adding modern contrivances like achievements, challenges, replays and leaderboards, so you can try to out-Mega Man your friends. It’ll also feature an exhaustive museum and database of enemies, allowing you to practice before going against them in the game proper.

It’s being made as a restoration project by the chaps at Digital Eclipse.

“Movies have the Criterion Collection, but there hasn’t been anything like that for games,” said Frank Cifaldi, Head of Restoration for Digital Eclipse. “We’re living in the golden age of a brand new form of artistic expression, and we’re not doing a very good job of making sure our games will be available five years from now, let alone fifty. The more we can do right now to take video game preservation seriously, the safer our history will be.”

And honestly, as much of a fan as I am of Mega Man, I don’t really see the point much. For once, I’m happy to say Mehga Man myself. These 6 games are easily playable through both grey and wholly legal means. If, however, they allowed us to tinker with games a little – like adding charged shots and slides to the first games, I’d be keen to experience the wonder and frustration of Mega Man all over again.

Mega Man 2 is the best but only because of Metal mans power. If they just did a straight port of the first six games I might skip it. Gameplay needs a little bit extra zing

So it should include a box of Zinger wings for you to consider it?

The dunked wings are just a little guilty pleasure of mine, R40 and I’m sorted.

The T-bone excursion is a bit more expensive…

The fact you like your steak undone makes me surprised by the rest of your choices – I expected muddy potatoes, grape juice, raw mushrooms & a glass of hops & water. ;P

Ah yes, Mega man… now those are good memories! Back when there were no walkthroughs, google or cheats and the only thing u could hope for is to finish the round and get the savegame code for that round. Back when gaming was really brutal.

This is why I’d rather put all my hope into Mighty No 9. The gameplay looks identical to megaman with much better graphics.
