Metal Gear Online Beta CANCELLED

42 second read

image So I originally posted about the idiocy of needing 3 logins to participate in the Metal Gear Online Beta.

Everyone happily flamed me for that saying I was just being a fanboy.

The I posted about the Konami servers crashing and once again I was flamed and told that it was just due to so many people downloading the game. Which is exactly what happened to the Live servers on the Halo beta.

Now the beta has been cancelled for all territories except Japan..

How are we going to spin this into something good?

The Babelfish translation is poor but according to the official MGO site

You considered this circumstance, one time discontinued the beta test execution other than Japan

    This is a complete debacle.

Konami’s official statement is that the new starting date will be announced tomorrow, and that the beta is extended to 11/05, btw. It definitely hasn’t been cancelled.

And then I hear that only Japan’s beta has been expanded..

What is even more telling however is that the few people who have played it have said very little about it.. And there have been no NDA’s signed

If you checked your news with multiple sources before posting it, then you’d see official statements from Konami in the US and Europe saying:

We would like to thank all players for their keen interest in taking part in the beta test. However, we regret to inform you that due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected. As a temporary measure, we will be deferring the start of the US public beta test until we are able to stabilize our server.

We would like to apologize for all inconveniences as well as confusion caused. We would like to add that due to the above reasons, we will be making the following changes to the schedule:

    1) Starting date: TBA. We will be making another announcement on 22/4/2008 23:00(PDT)
    2) Beta Test closure: This will now be on 11/05/2008 at 24:00(PDT) rather than 06/05/2008 at 24:00(PDT)

IMPORTANT: Please note that your voucher code will only be valid up until 05/06/2008, so please make sure to register them by then.

They’d better bring it back. I spent most of last night downloading the damn beta.

What a crock of sh1t. I spent the whole of Saturday downloading the 741MB file from PSN only to start it up and then to be told I need to download version 1.01. The options where to use a bittorrent download or straight from the servers. I went the torrent route, which after half an hour was on 8%. It took forever! Then I tried to register on Konami – and kept on getting ‘the tranaction was cancelled due to inactivity’ errors.
So I’m in the hole for a day and about 2 Gigs in bandwidth, only to have it defferred or possibly cancelled.
    Stuff it. 😡 😡

The problem here is that the idea of this site is to get news out quickly and I can’t always wait for a happy go lucky press release.

That press release in a nutshell states.. We didn’t realise that so many people would be included in this beta (even though it was by invitation only) so to hopefully get something working we are kicking out our biggest market.

Oh and those codes we gave out are going to expire before you can use them so make sure you register again.

Incompetence is no excuse, this has been a disaster from start to finish

Its not cancelled, just delayed until they get their servers pimped up.

Considering it’s probably the biggest BETA the world has ever seen, it’s understandable.

Better they realise its popularity etc now than suffer with these problems when the game launches.

Getting $%^# sorted out is what betas are for, as long is the game is good and playable near the end of the beta, its done its job

    Bigger than Halo 3’s beta?

    I don’t think I agree with that

Not that I dissagree, frankly I just dont know.

Was Halo3 a open beta like EU/ZA etc? and in what areas was it available?
Or how could you gain entrance to it?

Halo 3 beta was open to those who bought Crackdown…

MGO is not open you need to get a token, same way that COD4 did it…

    COD 4’s beta was awesome

    That awnsers it then.

Halo – beta limted to people who actually baught a different game

    MGS
US – Token system you get with MGS pre-order
EU/ZA + Other – Free Open beta to everyone
    Jap – Not sure

MGS beta seems pretty much “Bigger” to me then

AFAIK the MGS beta requires the user to have a token to enter. You had to apply for those tokens.

So Konami knows exactly how many people will try and join it…

If by token you mean register and a get a ID then yes…

Its FREE and available to anyone in most of Europe and South Africa, no code or token needed.
Just download it of the PSN store, patch it and register… and hopefully play when the get the beta going
Its been pretty BIG news for the past week

The US beta has a token/code system you get with pre-orders

Since you keep bringing it up Lazy, it needs to pointed out that you weren’t flamed for your comments on the idiocy of three logins (everyone agreed with you actually). You were flamed because you said that if it was Microsoft, everything would be A-okay.

Personally, I think it’s better to get correct information out than to get misleading or false information out fast.

It would’ve made all 10 minutes difference to the time you could’ve posted this to have checked Konami’s official page for the game and got the correct story in the press release.

But it’s your site and you can run it as you want to (obviously). Please take this as constructive criticism: as a reader, I’d rather that you be a bit late with the news and get it right than to put it up soon as you spot it on n4g.com and have it turn out to be wrong. There are more than enough sites out there pedding insubstantial rumours as it is.

And the Beta wasn’t invite only in the EU – anyone from the EU is allowed to take part, so they didn’t know how many EU people would download it.

Anyhoo, I’m also not disputing that this is a cock-up on Konami’s part, but that doesn’t change the fact that your initial post contained incorrect information.

AH so my information was completely off.

I was under the impression that you had to register for the chance to recieve a token… My apologies all round then, obviously Konami couldn’t of then known how many entries they would have received.

I wonder why they did it differently in the US? Which is who I am now blaming my confusion on 😉

@StNick, what I meant to imply with the initial article is that the PSn service is not integrated as it should be. Microsoft could have messed up the Beta as well but they wouldn’t have allowed 3 logins…

Yip, completely open… The only token you needed was you registering 3 times…

So, you can’t even compare Halo’s BETA to this one.

Personally I would rather have 5 logins than have to pay!! 😎
