Microsoft pledges Xbox One Indie support

Microsoft’s Xbox One, by all accounts, isn’t the most indie-friendly platform. Indie developers are unable to self publish their games on the platform in the way that they can on Steam, Nintendo platforms or even Sony’s PlayStation 4, which seems to have quite a bit of an indie push. The new Xbox won’t make any distinction between AAA titles, Indie games and Xbox Live Arcade titles – with them all being lumped under a general “games” category. That, however, doesn’t mean there won’t be any indie support.

Microsoft’s head of interactive entertainment, Don Mattrick has said that the platform will allow for indie games under and “independent creator program,” adding that there’s “no way” they’d leave smaller developers in the dark.

“We’re going to have an independent creator program,” he told Kotaku. “We’re going to sponsor it. We’re going to give people tools. That is something we think—I think—is important. That’s how I started in the industry. There’s no way we’re going to build a box that doesn’t support that.”

Mattrick says that Microsoft  is planning to supply “more information” on indie support in the future. I think E3 is a safe bet.

The backpedal, MS’s favourite new passtime. Well, at least this is good news. Still not 100% sure about everything being lumped together under ‘games’ though. The cost of trying to be a ‘multi – entertainment system’
You know what they say about the Jack-of-all-trades right?

How exactly are they going to support Indies? If they can’t self-publish does that mean that MS will have control over indie games and that creative control has to be shared between MS and the indie dev?….how worrying, but I am interested to see how MS will handle indies dattebayo

What is to stop them from implemeting any of their insane ideas 2 years down the line after initial purchases. The same goes for Sony.

Nothing. And that is what I would have done. Slowly creep the stuff into updates. First you hook the fish, then you reel it in!

I feel that the real problem here is not so much the console makers. I feel it is the pubslihers that insist on these ideas. Either you do it or we wont publish on your console. At this stage the threat of this will scare the console makers. Any pubsliher who excludes a console will be crazy because of lost money but at this stage they are only threatening. I just wish that Microsoft and Sony will be straight forward about this and say whose ideas these were. In respect of Microsoft, they probably helped the idea along.

Might be, but either potentially sell to 100 Mil customers or just to 50 Mil? As a console maker I would not worry about not getting a game on my system.

    Haters gonna hate.

They’re supporting Indies very nicely on Windows 8 & Phone, my moneys on them using the exact same infrastructure,

The biggest complaint of XBLIG was that the were cordoned off in their own section and everyone ignored them as “junk”. So now they put them with everyone else and everyone still bitches.

Dudes, this is what I would call one of those “No shit” moments, where just because they’re not bending over backwards to tickle your special place doesn’t mean they’re completely ignoring you, socially awkward freaks that we all happen to be…the world doesn’t revolve around us. =
