Microsoft PR department in overdrive

If anyone was delusional enough to think that Microsoft was going to take the HD-DVD hit lying down then they had another thing coming. A truly oozing press release has been sent out by Microsoft to the major media houses and once such journalist has published the entire thing online.

To be honest it reads very well and makes you believe that the PS3 and Wii are already out of the running. Which is the point I guess. However they do post some facts in it which are very interesting to read… The best being

While final sales numbers are still being collected, consumers in North America have spent over $3.5 billion dollars on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories.  That’s $1 billion more than consumers spent on the Wii, and $2 billion more than the PS3.   When December data is added, we expect Xbox 360 in 2007 to have generated more calendar year revenue than any other gaming platform ever, including PS2 at its peak.

Now that is some achievement, to add to that they now have over 10 million people on live, over 17 million consoles sold and have hosted a total of 560,000 people years of gaming on their network…

Those are some pretty impressive numbers and I would say this is the first real trumpet blowing of 2008. You can’t argue with success, however can they keep it going?

Meanwhile, this Xbox 360 memo showed up in my inbox – Tech Talk with Dean Takahashi –

$ 400 Million just for xbox live – and they can’t even keep it up always.

must say they are very big numbers.

Wonder what the new releases exclusive to xbox is that have not been mentioned yet.

Crimson skies 2 ? – would love this
    Banjo 3.
    Rare’s new party game.

I think a lot of new more “casual” games will get announced
    soon.

This is a bit of a silly article Lazy, what has this got to do with HD-DVD?

Yeah the numbers are great, but the Wii has sold more units, and the PS3 is catching up. The big difference is that the PS3 will help Blu-Ray sales, the XboX is not going to help HD-DVD sales, as has been proven by the sales figures for both formats.

And to be honest, selling $1 billion more than the Wii which is half the price and as been out for a year less is not really that special, especially considering MS had to pay 1$billion to extend everyone’s warrantys thanks to a faulty product.

The numbers are good, but unless a console can sell 50 million units or more in it’s lifetime it’s never going to be real winner. Time will tell which console(s) are going to end up on top.

? This article has nothing to do with HD-DVD or Blu-Ray apart from the timing. I just felt it was worthy of posting as those numbers are huge and well worth knowing.

But you start the article by saying “If anyone was delusional enough to think that Microsoft was going to take the HD-DVD hit lying down then they had another thing coming.”

I personally feel the MS couldn’t care less about HD-DVD.

@Banana, yeah maybe I should have more clear with that. What I meant to say was that Microsoft was not going to take a good PR event for their rivals without responding.

I fully agree with you that Microsoft couldn’t care less about HD-DVD and was just keeping this war going to A. Negatively effect PS3 sales and B. to push for digital distribution.

I don’t see what the big deal is, there is more than enough room for the PS3, XboX and Wii to all live together. We don’t need a winner, we actually need this competition more.

There can only be one 😀 Didn’t you watch highlander…

I think all three will be here for the next round as well. They all lasted out the last round didn’t they….

However if we didn’t have fanboys it wouldn’t be as interesting…
