Microsoft: Resolution and Framerate aren’t key

resolutiongate

Microsoft’s Xbox One is currently under fire for what’s been dubbed Resolutiongate. The Xbox One versions of multiplatform games run at lower resolutions than their PlayStation 4 counterparts. Heck, even some of the console’s biggest exclusive launch titles aren’t able to hit that sweet 1080p resolution. Microsoft says that stuff doesn’t really matter. It’s all about the games themselves.

Speaking to Rev3 Games (via Eurogamer), Microsoft’s Phil Spencer affirmed that games should be about more than framerates and resolutions; they should be about the actual games.

"If people want to get hung up on the numbers, they can do that, but really what they should be looking at is what’s on screen, with the controller in their hands, and play[ing] the game," he said "If they really care they can go play Forza at 1080p / 60 fps; a beautiful game. But games should be defined by more than their framerate and resolution. I think this is an industry about fun and people should put the controller in their hand – or gesture – and play the games and decide what they like. I think that’s the soul of what this industry’s about."

In principal, I completely agree with him. Games really are about more than how many pixels they’re made of. However, in this case it really does just smack of damage control, especially considering those same games perform better on Sony’s cheaper hardware.

If I think of all the memorable games that I’ll play over and over again, they’re the kind of games where gfx are ‘sub-par’. Elder Scrolls, Fallout and so forth.

If it’s a short game then yea, gfx are important, but for true immersion, it’s more about the story than anything else.

That’s all good and well, but why then just not stay with current gen? What does next gen offer more than current gen… Better graphics. So if good graphics aren’t important, what is the point of the whole exercise? Also for the price you should have good games and good FPS and pixels.

Because current gen will phase out. Many are sticking with it till the next gen iteration 2 comes. We will move because that is where the new games will be. Wanting more pixels and lenz flares if fine. But nit picking between 100K preztels and 80K preztels is dom when you had 10K prezels before anyhow.

Edit: On the price point. At the cost of sounding like a doos. Either wait for the dev’s to catch up or get a PC. What you SHOULD get for a price is defined by what’s available.

No I’ve got a PC. I have no intention of buying a console. I get what you’re saying with the 100k and 80k analogy. And I agree that the difference between the Xbone and the PS4 is probably insignificant. All I’m saying is graphics do matter. It is an important part of gaming whether you like it or not. Microsoft made a new console for the sole purpose of running better looking games. Not like the Xbone will suddenly have better games than the 360 gameplay wise. So to say that FPS and pixels don’t matter is bs. Then what’s the point of next gen?

That’s completely wrong. I’m not comparing next-gen to current-gen. I’m comparing PS4 to Xbox One. Nobody asked what the res difference in GTAV was between PS3 and Xbox 360. They played it, they loved it. What’s the bet there is a resolution difference between the 2?

Anyways, 720p next-gen will look better then 480p current gen. It’ll look better than 720p current gen. It’ll even look better than 1080p current gen. Your point is moot already, by default. Progress happens.

But between the PS4 and Xbone versions of the same game, people will love and play them and marvel at the awesome visuals. It won’t make a difference.

            Then you’re completely mistaken, still.

            Resolution is not superior graphics.

They will LOOK the same on both consoles. If nobody had said anything about the numbers, you wouldn’t notice the difference. They will BOTH have superior graphics compared to current gen.

If I had said superior graphics don’t matter between the consoles, I’d expect to be flamed. But this argument above is only about the 2 consoles. It’s already proven that PC’s outstrip both consoles in terms of graphical grunt. That’s why I added that comment at the end. If graphics matter so much to you, buy a PC if you don’t already have one. Its the one universal thing that PC gamers always brag about, their superior graphics.

Graphics is not about resolution, its about EVERYTHING. The WHOLE PACKAGE. PC’s have MORE AA, more AF, MORE EVERYTHING. NOT JUST RESOLUTION. That is common knowledge, how did you jump to your conclusion?

Regardless of that battle, PC vs Console, progress happens. And I’m all for it. Next-gen is progress. So yeah, you’re clutching at straws here mate.

We should actually focus on the games themselves… What use is all this if a game only keeps you busy for 4-8 hours? I miss those days where you could spend hours at end playing a game and all that mattered was the story and playability.

Games these days are so dumbed down and they only focus on the looks… Kinda like jocks, is this where the industry is going to? Aspiring to be like jocks? :O

Why not make Xbox 360 2.0 and PS3 2.0 instead. all about the games right.

I think it’s to show off their impressive gaming engines… All I want is a proper challenge again, a game that you actually need to think about and struggle your ass off to finish.

Well, that’s just it. I am not really all that exited about next gen, I’m not even that excited about gaming anymore. There are a few new titles that have captured my attention, but I know in the end they will be shortly lived.

I think I just miss the good old days

One of my friends are really into Indies and I have seen some of the games he has played. That is the only reason why I want to get a new PC so that I can start playing those.

wait for next gen to get established.
its just been released, obviously all the devs will want to be like “ermagurd perty graffics”
each dev wants to push the engine early, so they know their limits and dont end up sounding like that Molyneux guy when talking about their upcoming games.

      sophistication comes later.

REsolution isn’t too critical. But framerate is.

I’m sorry but I can see the difference between 30FPS and 60FPS.

To me 30FPS looks like it’s “hitching” and isn’t as smooth. Whereas 60FPS looks smooth and more fluid. Am I the only one that can tell the difference?

Its only important for FPS games where you play competitively. Otherwise, no, it really doesn’t matter. I’d rather play Witcher at 30fps with epic gfx than at 60fps with almost epic gfx. it WILL look better.

Really? I find driving games give me headaches at anything less than 60FPS. Also it is frustrating as cars shouldn’t hitch. It must look smoooooooooth as silk

I don’t know, it’s never mattered to me. I play more NFS than say GT, I don’t care for the sims, I want heart pumping action. And at 30fps vs 60fps, it makes about 0 difference. Maybe less.

When you start hitting 20fps, its bad. But 30+ is cinematic. It’s perfectly fine for me. I don’t care for more – unless I’m playing competitively, and more so in FPS.

dont need an xbone, but i do want it. (actually pc masterace, but not the point)
            and i want it to do 1080p @ 60fps

            November 7, 2013 at 14:28

And it will. But it won’t make a difference if its 60fps at 720p or 1080p, but it’ll always be 60fps. That’s the issue for you right?

With my pc, if i hit 30fps on anything, i get an itchy credit card finger.
since bf4 and CoD Ghosts have come out, the amount of effort ive put into restraining my credit card finger, is immense.

so remind me, microsoft, how 30fps is satisfactory.

How about we stop the resolution debates/excuses and just admit that the next gen consoles should run all games either 1080p at 30fps or 1080p at 60fps. We waited literally YEARS for the new consoles and after all this time we getting all these excuses. Now im not finicky about resolutions, but if i must look at the amount of years we waited then surely this shouldnt have been such an issue because in reality plenty of gamers out there expected 1080p 30fps/60fps.

if you can spot lots of jaggies then yeah agreed, if it upscales 720p and it looks amazing then im not ganna sit staring at the screen looking for problems.

If your doing that your not a gamer.

I dont do that, but just simply saying that there are plenty gamers that expected nothing less after waiting so long for the next gen consoles. Im perfectly happy with Ryse being 900p because it just simply looks great. Hell if it was even 720p it wouldnt be an issue as long as it looks great as you say.

Im gonna go out and purchase myself a new gpu. And I will sell my old one to subsidise the cost. I will then be able to play all next gen games for the next 3-5 years on 1080p with a total cost of R1500 (depending on how much I sell my old card for). Boom.

The problem is Mr. Sir, when you can play the exact same game, with the exact same gameplay experience, on two different consoles, then the difference in framerate and resolution DO matter.

I would say that resolution doesn’t always make the difference between whether a game is quality or not, however, I would say that making excuses for not reaching resolution benchmarks that were set 7 years ago, is beyond damage control. It’s trying to make excuses for a very very poor showing.

Additionally, I can only imagine that if the tables were reversed, Microsoft would be doing the exact same thing Sony is, with regards to championing performance. Much like…you know, Microsoft did during the 360/PS3 early years. So, let’s not act like Microsoft’s shit doesn’t stink when they’re in the drivers seat.

Make all the excuses you want, fanboys, Microsoft, writers etc… but the fact is, 1080p was easily possible with ~7800 series GPU’s, with 2g of RAM. Why this isn’t possible on a GPU/RAM/CPU combo lightyears ahead of that is simply making excuses.
