Microsoft Responds to Xbox 360 S Red Dot Claims. Sorta

The sleeker, new Xbox 360 S is available on US retail shelves, and depending on who you listen to, it’s quite a marvel. A few unsubstantiated claims  have surfaced saying that the new console is as prone to failure as its notoriously fragile predecessors.

We know that the console will initiate an auto-shutdown if it gets too hot and detects insufficient ventilation. That’s probably a good thing. There are also rumours of the power brick failing, producing a red dot of its very own. Microsoft have responded to claims about the new console’s reliability issues. Sort of.

“We couldn’t be more proud of the consoles we are building now, as well as the new Xbox 360. This console is the culmination of years of continuous innovation in design, testing and learning. Today we are confident we are shipping a high quality product.”

Uhhh. Thanks for that. I’d like to imagine Microsoft’s R&D made damn sure that their console isn’t as nearly prone to failure. They can’t make that mistake twice, can they? Personally I think that, with the console having been out for barely a week, any reports of widespread failure are bogus and those unfortunate few that have experienced failure are dealing with the normal, accepted failure rates of electronic equipment.

Update: My cousin phoned xbox support on Friday and they told him to return the xbox 360s with its power supply. He says the support person had a questionnaire and when he mentioned that the power supply redbricked, the support person instantly gave him a support ticket and instructions to return it. He says it seems they were aware of the problem, because they didn’t ask him any more questions after that.

It’s probably easier to just get it replaced through microsoft, since the warranty is with them not with the store but I’ll ask him.

I asked him Fox1 and he said he was advised by the store to phone Microsoft support.
