Microsoft’s PR team has been on the offensive since the NPD figures were released showing the PS3 as the top console in America.
David Dennis, an Xbox spokesman, is the latest to throw his thoughts into the hat and I have to say I agree with most of it.
According to Mr Dennis
“We feel great about our numbers, and we expected Sony to have a great month," […] "We expect it to be short-term and we expect them to be back down to third place soon like they’ve always beenâ€
I think it’s fair to say we all expected Sony’s figures to be great last month, it doesn’t matter what you are selling really if you have a price cut then the people on the fence will quickly snap it up and your sales will increase. Then drop.
Whether or not the PS3 sales will drop far enough down to put them back into third place is very much up for debate though. The console is now very well priced and with the silly season on the horizon you could be forgiven for thinking that Sony will keep this momentum going.
If I had to put money on it however I would still say the Wii is expected to be the top seller in November and December followed by the 360 and then very closely followed by the PS3. But it’s no longer as straight forward as it previously has been.
It’s also interesting to see the words coming out of Microsoft recently, they are very much gearing up for a fight which is a sure fire sign that they are now a little more worried than they have ever been.
2010 is going to be a cracker of a year.

Com on Microsoft , cut the price of the arcade to
$150 and the elite to $250.
You make nice profits on the xbox already, just pass it on the the consumer. You anyway have to do it if you
want to be the top HD console this year.

I reckon MS will take 2nd spot in USA this christmas by a very close margin with PS3 in 3rd.
However I think global sales will see the PS3 steal 2nd.

I was looking at the European console sales on Vgchartz. It’s getting very close in the European market between the PS3 and the 360. But it was the same last year and after the Christmas period, the 360 opened a nice gap.

Always? Really? Erm, PS2 anyone?

Does the PS2 actually get more than 2 releases every 6 months?
The console has got a great library, but in terms of new titles being released it is really getting the short end of the stick.
So in terms of a current generation stats, yeah it has been in third place for quite some time.

Just the comment “like they’ve always been seems a bit disingenuous, considering Sony dominated console gaming for a very long time, and it was actually MS that was in last place before the success of the 360.

Mark my words. The PS3 is gonna be in 2nd place before next year June. Thats my prediction, Think about it the elite and the PS2 slim are both more or less equal in price but, that Blu Ray player is looking mighty attractive now.. Not to mention the Christmas sales thats gonna Hit when FF13 releases in Japan December too!

Do you mean overall worldwide LTD sales, or just monthly sales. Because LTD it is not possible, because
they might add another 1000 000 this year, but next year we should be back to 100 000 ps3 sold and say 80 000 xbox 360 per week, So in the first 6 months you might you can only have a diff of about 500 000, it is traditionaly the last 3 months of the year where you sell the most.

PS3 is coming up in a big way now. Microsoft had better do something special with Natal or they know that they are going to possibly be in trouble.

Well sooner or later we Xbox owners are gonna be like…. Screw that ,i want Quality of quantity. Think about why buy a new 360 every freaking year and a half, when you can buy your self a console where the failure rate is almost 3 times lower, with a library of games you wish your 360 had as well… Sure is tempting…

Why would you buy a new Xbox when MS replaces your broken one for free?
The rest of your post I do agree with though

Those refurbished xbox 360 consoles (they love to send out) are lucky packets. They either work for the next year or so, or they die on plug in. Mine died on plug in, and I was console-less for 2 months. I eventually ended up buying another one. In hindsight, probably not the smartest thing…

It’s going to take a while for PS3 sales to stabilise. We can probably expect several spikes in hardware sales in the next few months, with the Christmas season, FFXIII, GOW3 and GT5. Things should go back to normal after that.
