Microsoft to buy the PlayStation

Lets get something straight right away, I am not a fan of the one console future that certain large companies and fans have been talking about.

I honestly think a single console future is one of the worst possible options out there but that being said… if we were going to go for a one console future how is this for an idea?

Don Reisinger, a journalist over at CNET, has been discussing quite the quite odd possibility that Microsoft may make an offer for the Sony Gaming Division as a whole.

And when you look at it it’s not the most ridiculous idea in the world. The gaming division used to be a huge money spinner for Sony but so far in this generation it has been a leech on the company and even though it has just managed to turn a profit, it is still a far way off becoming a really profitable part of the company.

Think about it from the perspective of the Sony shareholders, if Microsoft came now and offered them a truck load of cash for the licensing rights and also offered them 40% of all future royalties and that the PlayStation brand would stay alive… do you think they may think about it?

/insert very limited knowledge of corporate stuffses.

Well seeing the the Sony Entertainment Business is making a loss. You buy assets – liabilities + GOODWILL. Sony can make a truckload of cash for that reason and could actually be better off selling Playstation.

However, i don’t think MS would make that move. I think MS’s Gaming strategy is to buy any promising dev studios and absorb them into the Microsoft Game Studios. The intention being that xbox the console is just the way of sucking you into spending truckloads of cash on games/accessories. Next generation, MGS is going to try and take on EA, Ubi etc. It wouldn’t even surprise me if MGS games start appearing on competitors consoles.

I think you’re more likely to see “Microsoft buys Take2, or Square Enix or ” than MS buys Playstation.

Will never happen, Sony wont let it.
The Sony gaming devision is making buckets, its only the ps3 division that is struggling, PS2 continues to be a cash cow and the PSP isnt doing badly at all.
PS sony entertainment isnt losing money it just had fewer blockbusters over the last fiscal year, which gives the impression of a bad year!

I need to kinda clarify something here- you do know Kanomi is not owned by Sony? MGS has appeared on the DS, X-Box, Camecube and started on the nes?? Besides I don’t think that Microsoft are as driven as EA (no comment)to snatch up all the game dev companies. Personally they should stick so quality not quantity.

I think you will find Milesh was talking about Microsoft Game Studios (MGS) and not Metal Gear Solid (MGS)…

    coincidence? I think not 😛
