Microsoft vs Sony

PS3So Microsoft released a press release earlier this week saying that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by 2:1 over the Black Friday weekend in the US.

Sony however has now responded saying

It’s (Sony Computer Entertainment America) policy not to disclose our unit sales numbers until NPD numbers are officially released which will be December 13th. However, I can assure you that Microsoft’s estimates of our PS3 unit sales numbers are way off and they did not outsell PS3 2:1 during Black Friday week.

So is Microsoft lying or will Sony be caught with their pants down when the official NPD stats are released. One thing for sure is that the statement from Sony cannot be misunderstood and they must be pretty confident to state something so blatantly…

Personally I expect the 360 to have outsold the PS3 by a large margin in the States yet again but for now we will all have to wait.

Yes the Nintendo Wii crushed everyone again with estimated sales of 350 000 for the week… Scary numbers.

Xbox 360 tops PS3, trails Wii in initial holiday sales

I know wii outsells the other two… but its not a serious gaming machine, well in my mind. I want one , but just as a second toy..

I always wonder about these stats:

1.) The Xbox360 has had it’s head start approx. 1 year
2.) It’s the States = XBOX FTW, i.e. everyone has one
3.) Sony’s PS3 price at first was crazy, so it never sold
4.) Now that Sony’s come down in price(marginally) and Everyone in the states has an XBOX360 getting PS3 at the now lower price, would make sense.

why oh why would you get 2 XBOX360’s? IMHO these stats that keep on being released don’t “show” the true popularity of the console. because of the Market share already gained!

therefore if PS3 “has” out sold the XBOX360(which wouldn’t surprise me, since it’d be like having a launch day) it’s nothing to get excited about, the only thing you should be excited about is that the general population are now slowly seeing a “good” enough reason to get a PS3.

With you there Redzombie. The Wii is the first choice of soccer moms

We cant argue the figures. It’s a mover for sure. But is it really taking market share away from the like of MS and Sony ? Or is Nintendo inadvertently creating a market for those who crave something with more punch after they get bored with the novelty of the Wii ? I’m thinking strictly long term here

@kold, sure you’d want multiple 360’s – if you’re a family with multiple TV’s – firstly as cheap media extenders, and secondly to play together, it’s a lot better than split screen.

RROD might have something to do with them buying multiple 360’s

doobiwan, ok but look at how many families would consider getting so many consoles, it’s a small minority my point is if they were going to do that they’d have done it already, there for making the stats bias to the PS3 stats

Where Nintendo struck gold this gen is the fact that the console was priced at a mass market price at launch. If you look at the trends for the PS2 – it shipped about 8 mio units in its first year – and only started doing the big no’s when the price came down to the $200 mark – which is the price at which middle class mom’s buy little Tommy a birthday present. PS3 and Xbox are at the moment still appealing to the serious gamers. But the 80% of gamers who have a console for the odd bit of Tekken at a braai with the boys are getting lured by the Wii’s lower price and pick up and play acessibility.
