Microsoft wants to bolster its exclusives library

Library

There’s no denying that when it comes to AAA exclusives, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is falling behind the pack. Sony’s PlayStation 3 has a wealth of exclusives – games like Killzone, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, God of War (and the list goes on). Nintendo has all that first-part goodness; Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong (and that list goes on and on too) while the 360 really only has Fable, Halo Gears of War and Forza.

There was a time where multiplatform games looked and performed better on the 360 – but with developers getting to grasps with the PS3’s complicated hardware, that’s hardly the case anymore.

With sales of Kinect, Microsoft’s controller-free motion controller doohicky essentially stalling, perhaps they’ve realised that they can’t just rely on that to differentiate themselves. So they’re looking to increase they’re exclusives library; or at least that’s what a job listing at Gamasutra suggests.

They’re looking for somebody who can help them “to partner with the best developers in the world to create the next great core franchises for this generation and future generations of Xbox.”

“MGS has a number of successful core franchises: Halo, Fable, Forza Motorsport, and Gears of War. Our job is to add new blood to this stable of AAA franchises. We have huge ambitions for what we want to accomplish, and we need a great producer to be able to help us get where we want to go,” continues the listing.

Personally? I think it’s a bout bloody time. Microsoft needs to do a little more to distinguish themselves – especially for next-gen – and building up a great library of real, core games is just the way to do that. Another is to let Microsoft-owned company RARE do its own thing, instead of making Kinect games and avatar rubbish – but that’s just my own opinion.
