Microsoft will invest $1 Billion in exclusive titles

Microsoft may have felt a backlash from core gamers over it’s Xbox One service reveal but according to an interview with OXM us gamers really do have nothing to worry about and we’ve not been forgotten.

Microsoft did announce at the event that they are going to release 15 exclusives for the Xbox One that include 8 new IP’s but they didn’t go into any further detail than that. But now they have.

Not only are they releasing 15 exclusives but they are releasing all 15 in the first year of retail with all 8 of those new IP’s hitting in the first 12 months. Microsoft has invested around a billion dollars into these exclusives and is even calling some of them AAAA titles.

Obviously Forza 5 is one of those 15 and is hotly anticipated by racing fans, the other reveal was for Quantum Break which is a brand new IP. But with nothing really shown about the game we can’t begin to judge it.

But what will the other 13 titles be? I can’t believe Halo won’t be one or that another Gears of War isn’t in the works.

So what are the other 6 exclusive titles that aren’t a brand new IP, anyone have any guesses?

its that mentality thats killing the gaming industry. not everyone want to spend R700 bucks on a game that isnt that great! on a game like Farcry 3 or Gta 5 sure no problem, not on a game to pass the time with. Just to add my 5 cents to be a harcore pc gamer you need cash to afford the hardware, so where should the “poor” people go to? console….. I know plently rich people who still moan about prices

A PC is a big box that most likely stays in the same room, most likely stays in the same position, most likely connected to the internet some how. DRM is never good but it’s easy to find a crack if you want borrow the game, lets say.

Consoles are smaller, most likely used room to room, house to house, city to city. Online DRM is not just about buying second hand games. You can’t borrow or gift a game anymore. You can’t take your console away from the internet plug. You can’t take your console anywhere without that kinect camera and mic spying on you.

If you can’t make your console accessible and mobile, then what is the point of the Xbox One, to play Call of Duty and Fifa online?

I’m looking forward to the day when Sony reveal how their console will also not allow second hand sales, how they will require an internet connection. I’ve yet to hear one real complaint about the XBOX ONE that isn’t true about the PS3, or has yet to be confirmed about the PS3.

The TV and features are not negative points against MS. As long as they still do games properly, all that extra stuff is exactly that, extra bonuses you can choose to ignore. I’m looking forward to E3 to see if these exclusives are worth it and for Sony to start actually stating how they will handle things.

The OVGs and other fanboys on both sides of these fanboy arguements have been more pathetic and childish than the last generation.

They chose to wait to show the shell of the console, they did show games running on their specs, real-time (way back in February).

If anything your point works against you.

Here is the issue. People are saying how they are going to buy a PS4 because MS are not focusing on gamers anymore. That we, as gamers, are not their focus. As a gamer, Sony hasn’t wooed me yet. They still have a long way to do that. And MS specifically stated that they are leaving the games part of their console for E3.

The way I saw the Xbox One reveal was like this:

        Here is our new console

You all know it will play games, but it will also do this TV crap I don’t care about

Join us at E3 to see how it will treat games

As gamers, we have no reason to attack MS. Yet everyone is. Until Sony and MS reveal all their cards, we don’t know how to judge them. I’m waiting for MS to show me, as a gamer, why I should want their console. After E3, if they haven’t wooed me, then I will understand some of the consoles. But MS have yet to give reason for us to think they don’t care about the hardcore gamer anymore.

Absolutely fair point DarthofZA . That is how I saw the reveal too. that night i watched it I was excited as hell for it …. I was waiting for E3 so I can see MS and Sony pit themselves against each other…that’s exciting no?…what people are failing to understand and what is irking me is that they think we are all Sony Fanboys now because we are raging..no, we are raging for what FOLLOWED the reveal. the Used game fee news, online connection,no indie self publish etc etc ….. MS failed to control the news flowing out and that caused a downward spiral everywhere on the internet. I would’ve reserved my judgement for e3, but not now. There is too many things wrong with this console. and if Sony does the same….I will rage against Sony, as will everyone else.

The problem here is that Microsoft CHOSE to market the reveal of their new console not to their loyal fanbase of hardcore gamers, but… TV-viewers, sports-gamers and the call of doody crowd. The reveal. Of their Brand. Spanking. New. Console. It’s like… a friend of yours inviting you over to a party, but not telling you he’d have his drunk frat-buddies who irritate you over at the same time while they watch football. I think it’s fine to feel a bit affronted that we aren’t their priority target group.

          • Argentil

            May 30, 2013 at 15:03

Because the success of the Xbox line is rooted in the gaming fans. You’re not going to find netflix subscribers scrambling to watch this launch event. Who do you think were waiting with baited breath to watch the Xbox One reveal? Even if they are ‘focussing on the games at E3,’ why should you be satisfied with a terrible reveal event catering to all the wrong demographs?
Do you think they’re not going to mention anything about SPAWTS, KINECT and COD at E3?

          • DarthofZA

            May 30, 2013 at 15:16

You’re actually wrong. MS stated while ago that a majority of their traffic is not gaming related. Yes, it is a gaming console, but it has been so much more than that for quite some time. I use my Xbox for Netflix, for GT, as my DVD player and music streamer a lot more than I use it for gaming. Doesn’t make me any less of a gamer.

Besides a majority of their audience using the consoles for things other than gamers, they’re still claiming that they are looking after the gamers. All they did was ask you wait until E3 to see how. You know E3, the big GAMING show. Wait until after E3 then pass that judgement.

          • Argentil

            May 30, 2013 at 15:23

I wasn’t implying you’re less of a gamer for netflixing. It kind of reduces the appeal of the features when every other device around can do the same thing anyways. Calm down, brah.

Let me pull up the stat saying the PS3 is the most utilized console for media. How much media content did we see Feb 21st?

As were PCs, until the industry realized that they needed it. Consoles have got to that stage now. The Wii-U library is suffering because it doesn’t have it. The industry has been gradually building up to this in consoles for the last few years. I can’t remember the last time I bought a console game that didn’t come with a code that unlocked the multiplayer or story missions or something along those lines. This is the evolution of the industry, something that is required (as is evident by the amount of game companies that have either closed down or downsized), and MS are merely the first to address it.

          • Argentil

            May 30, 2013 at 14:51

Oh, and how’s that free-to-play policy with Microsoft coming along? Are they still being jerks about it? They need to realise that f2p is a large part of the future, and their selfish policies are preventing people from porting over.

            May 30, 2013 at 14:55

I bought quite a few games recently that I just popped in and played all the way to the end. Even if this is an evloutionary step, why should it be okay that it is? You think those companies failed and closed down because of DRM and Perpetual internet connection?…no It’s because of radical expectations. Seriously why isit that Dark Souls sold 2 million but it is a huge success, whereas Resident evil 6 sold OVER 5 million but it was a failure?… it’s all a ploy to get more control…DRM is not something needed…And that is not why they wiiU is failing, mark my words, if Sony does the same, you will see the surge in wiiU sales

            May 30, 2013 at 15:17

I think it was Activision, maybe EA, can’t remember, but one of them stated that they’re not releasing on the Wii-U because it doesn’t have DRM against USED games. The library is suffering due to their lack of DRM.

Actually, it was EA, and they said they wouldn’t be releasing games running their new engine on the Wiiu because their preliminary benchmarks running the engine were very underwhelming so they would avoid ‘entering that rabbit hole.’ Something along those lines.

EA. WiiU can’t support EA’s Engines……The library isn’t suffering because of DRM ….. there isn’t a big library in any case. and that’s hurting WiiU…

Sony are the main founders behind Blu-Ray. You could consider them to be the head of Blu-Ray association – as silly as that sounds. Anyone who uses the technology, pays a commission to the founders to use the technology. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090103234243AAS45lv

That may be true but MS have their hands in many other royalties of the system. I believe Microsoft make more money than Google for every Android phone sold.

It’s just part of the business.

          WRONG.

Panasonic are the majority owners and developers of Bluray. Sony are just one of over 160 companies that have a stake in it.

Sony started two projects in collaboration with Philips[8] applying the new diodes: UDO (Ultra Density Optical),[9] and DVR Blue (together with Pioneer),[10] a format of rewritable discs that would eventually become Blu-ray Disc (more specifically, BD-RE). The core technologies of the formats are similar.

The first DVR Blue prototypes were unveiled at the CEATEC exhibition in October 2000 by Sony.[11] A trademark for the “Blue Disc” logo was filed February 9, 2001.[12] On February 19, 2002, the project was officially announced as Blu-ray Disc,[13][14] and Blu-ray Disc Founders was founded by the nine initial members.

Sony spear-headed the project, and pulled phillips into it. They are the main founders of the tech, as referenced in my previous link.

Not that any of this is relevant. I’m sure there is some MS tech in Sony’s console. Who knows, maybe Kinect’s eye is a Sony camera. Stranger things have happened.

Disclaimer: I’m not insinuating that Kinect is a Sony camera. I’m making a point that cross-breeding is very common in console technology.

Here’s the other side of the coin. How many great development houses have closed down in the last year alone because of piracy and not making enough money out of new game purchases?

I blame that on High production costs and gamers only play on-line FPS murder sims…now with a dog.

140million PS360s and not even 3% of the market is interested in supporting games like Tomb Raider, DS3, HITMAN, MAX PAYNE 3 or Sleeping dogs.

They know that, XBOXLIVE gives them the data, and only 1 third is game time. The rest is TV TV TV TV SPORTS YOUTUBE FACEBOOK and dialing up PIZZAAAAAAA

Like I have said in a previous article, they are doing this because the stats are leaning in that direction because of these “gamers”.

We still need to give our support to the other games. DRM comes in because they see they’re not selling, so the first question is: Are they pirating our games?

No, it’s not because of these ‘gamers.’ Unrealistic expectations by publishers are culling game developers, that and the economy. Besides, pirates are lesser ‘gamers’ anyway.

Actually, pirates are hypocrites. I don’t think crushing used games is going to counter that. There are so many positives that come with used games. If MS can work on a solution that’s better than long-term DLC and online passes, I would rethink my stance on this whole anti-used games matter. There are hints that they are implementing online trading of used games – if that works out, it might be worthwhile BUT…. Gamestop and MS are very chummy at the moment. Cutting out Gamestop would be the best way for this to work, and Gamestop would not be holding hands if that were the case.

Piracy plays a every small part to loss of sales, mainly because piracy or not, those people were never planning to buy that game or games.

The cost of making games from great development houses are high. For most of us, we still feel that 1 million units sold is great and a success but games from great development houses need like 5 million units sold to break even. If you look at the new Tomb Raider, Hitman, Sleeping Dogs, ect, they sold millions of units, which means that there are more people buying games today than lets say 10 years ago, but they just cost to much to make and people won’t / can’t stop playing Cod and Fifa. So great development houses fail sometimes and piracy is not to blame.

Yeah, but the development costs of COD don’t come up to 67 million (estimated at 28 million), and that 1 Billion for 15 games averages out to be 67 million. It is a significant amount to invest into games.

Just for sh*ts and giggles, I would like to reference that Activision spend less than half of the budget on game development, and the rest on promotion 😛

However hyperbolic that statement may be, there’s a semblance of truth in it. If we apply that logic, it would stand to reason that these TV projects they are working on also count as promotional tools for the related games. If that’s the case, $1 Billion is not all that much.

I will be positive here, and say that the above is probably not true, I hope. How much of that $1 Billion is attributed to brokering timed exclusivity? Lots of factors that would inflate the figure, rendering it mostly unreliable. I am confident there will be at least 6 really good games from MS at E3. Super-inflated figures have nothing to do with that assumption.

Well yes and no, it entirely depends on the reality of what’s being said. Microsoft put a ton of money into exclusivity/timed exclusivity deals with the 360, and they could very well be doing that now. This could be a similar circumstance where they’ve simply bought the exclusive rights to big titles already in the pipeline, they’d have to throw in extra to entice developers from the possible goldmine a multi-plat launch would produce.

If they just spent 1B in their games division, then that’d certainly be something to take note of though.
