Microsoft’s laying the smackdown on leakers

This week, a batch of Gears of War footage was leaked all over the internet, like the way Darryn leaks all over the inside of his pants when he reads erotic Batman fanfiction. Leaking stuff is very obviously going against the terms and conditions set out in the signed Non–Disclosure Agreements that accompany the opportunity to play very early code. Naturally, Microsoft is unhappy about the leaks. And they’re going to be punishing leakers.

In the initial report, Kotaku claimed – based on their sources – that Microsoft was temporarily bricking leakers’ consoles, using a remote killswitch. It would temporarily render their systems useless.

“This being said, as per that agreement with the testers in fault, Microsoft also permanently disabled their Xbox LIVE accounts (as well as other suspected accounts present on their Xbox One kits) and temporarily blocked all of their Xbox One privileges – meaning that for a period of time which Microsoft decides on depending on the severity of the offense, their Xbox One is entirely unusable.”

That is a scary as all hell thought. While the switch does exist, it’s not quite as nefarious, as Microsoft explained:

“To be clear, if a console is suspended from Xbox Live for a violation of the Terms of Use, it can still be used offline,” a representative told Gameinformer. “Microsoft enforcement action does not result in a console becoming unusable. Suspensions for both consoles and accounts are determined by looking at a number of factors.  To avoid enforcement action including suspension from the service, users should follow the Xbox Live Terms of Use and Code of Conduct.”

To sum: Don’t leak stuff. Microsoft may or may not possess the ability to turn your console in to a black lump of plastic and semiconductors. They’ll likely only nix your access to its online services though.

Which, if you consider their initial plan was to be always-online, is still kinda worrying.

Exactly, can you imagine suddenly getting suspended and when you phone and ask they go: “Oh, it seems you were leaking footage, sorry, have some anal lube, because that’s where you can stick your XBone…”

I don’t have sympathy for the NDA-breakers, they shouldn’t have broken their agreement.

But just imagine if you owned an always-online Xbone & your Live account gets suspended accidentally, you’re fucked until it gets reinstated.

That was the kind of panic stricken moment I had with my social club account being stolen, now imagine that happens to an unsuspecting victim, I would lose it, the whole Xbone, I’ll just throw it away…

I’m certain there has to be some consumer law making it illegal to fully brick the console.

Depending on the NDA that you sign… If for instance they state that the equipment used has to be sponsored by MS, then naturally they can, if they have a contract that you’ve signed that states that whether it’s your own Xbone, well… It’s their NDA…

I’ve seen cases (mostly rental agreements) where people signed, but the content was still considered illegal.

But if they give you the console to test/whatever, then brick the fuckers.

Yep! Also remember that what you would be testing, whether on your own or on theirs, is their intellectual property, so they can if your equipment is used as a (show and tell) distribution platform….

      adult nappies?

My wife uses cloth nappies on our baby girl (17 months) and is of course on cloth nappy facebook groups. And they have to actively weed out the non-parents that have some sort of diaper fetish or something. Not often, but it happens.

perhaps the or something is cloth nappies for poor sick granny or something, but they never say WHY they want adult cloth nappies.

why? cloth nappies, for babies, are awesome. Save the environment, save money, that sort of thing. Cool patterns, for example.

I’m fine with that, my active imagination/visual just doesn’t deal well with diaper fetishists.

Imagine if MS and Konami teamed up. They could get rid of video games entirely.
