Minecraft realms and transfers

Minecraft is absurdly popular. Mojang created the perfect sandbox, and it seems that sandboxes are still the favorite activity on the playground – everyone is jumping in and getting involved. There have been some logistical issues along the way, especially for parents, but it appears there may be a solution.

Already available in other parts of the world, Minecraft Realms has launched in North America. It’s a paid service ($13 per month) that provides hosting and setup for multiplayer Minecraft worlds. It can be a godsend for parents:

Playing Minecraft over the internet is a lot of fun, but it can be tricky to set up. To make things easier, we’re creating Minecraft Realms. It’s a paid service that lets users quickly set up an online world which can be accessed by an approved list of players.

Whether you’re building, adventuring, or competing in one of our featured mini-games, Realms servers are easy to set up and available 24/7.

At the moment, the service is only available for PC versions of Minecraft, but it will come to the Pocket Edition as well. But don’t worry console Minecraft fans, I also have news for you. Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, made the following announcement via twitter:

After months of teaming up with Mojang, we can confirm that Minecraft X360 Edition will save transfer to Xbox One Edition…more news soon!

PlayStation is hoping to offer a similar service when Minecraft releases on PS4 and Vita in Q2/Q3.
