Minecraft

Markus Persson, better known as the genius who invented Minecraft, has released some stats around how many people have downloaded Minecraft and then purchased it and it is just amazing how this guy has completely changed his life with this game.

Markus has pulled off a marketing coup by actually releasing this game in alpha and offering it at a 50% discount for people who pick it up early.

But let’s get to the numbers.

1 642 632 people have registered for Minecraft and then amazingly 519 393 people have then proceeded to plonk down €9.95 to pre-purchase the game. That’s a 31.61% conversion rate.

In the last 24 hours 23 334 new people have registered with 9077 people buying the game.

Since there are no publishers or distributors involved in this Markus has made €5 167 960.35 so far and is adding €90 316.15 to his bank account every day.

That’s R870 000 every day being added to his R50 000 000 fortune.

Indie developers the world over are wishing they had come up with this right now.

But wouldn’t he have to pay for the bandwith (downloads and the online multiplayer portion of the game)? I would imagine that would actually lessen his profits?

I’m not entirely sure how Minecraft works but bandwidth is dirt cheap and a lot of server farms offer unlimited bandwidth for very low monthly charges.

I am sure he has a fairly decent bill at the end of each month but I doubt it equates to R800 000 a day or even close to that :wassat:

Well, but you shouldn’t forget the different taxes. In germany he would at least have to pay “sales taxes” and “income taxes”, right?
