Minecraft’s unifying “Better Together” is out now

Minecraft’s much-anticipated Better Together update is finally out, bringing cross-platform multiplayer to the world-building and breaking blocky game. That means that the Xbox One Version is now in line with the Windows 10, Android, iOS and VR editions of the game. It’ll be coming to Nintendo’s Switch soon, allowing all of those platforms to play together like one, big, happy family.

They can all join each others’ worlds, or even hop on to servers together. The new versions are built on the Bedrock Engine, and are now just called “Minecraft.” There’s no more Pocket Edition, or Windows 10 Edition, because they are all now the same thing, with the same updates.

The original, granddaddy Java version of the game is now called Minecraft: Java Edition, and is still the only version that supports heavy modding and scripting. The now unified “Minecraft” appars to be the primary version of the game going forward. That doesn’t mean that development on the Java Edition will cease though.

Says Mojang:

“Now that we have finally achieved a unified Minecraft which can be played on most devices, we wanted to simplify things and make it clear that they can all play together, so it felt to be the right time to simply call them Minecraft. We also found that the community refers to the Java PC version as the Java Edition, so it felt natural to rename it to make it more distinctive from the other versions of the game. We plan on actively supporting the Java Edition going forward with updates as we always have and have also welcomed several new members to the development team in Stockholm.”

Unfortunately for PlayStation-bound Minecraft owners, they’ll be left out of this party. While the game will still be getting content updates, cross-platform multiplayer is not on the cards, thanks to Sony’s reluctance to let its online network play nicely with others. We know, given that Epic unintentionally enabled the feature in Fortnite before axing it that it works, so it’s really just a case of Sony not wanting to play nicely.

“While we are thrilled to be able to confirm the new version of Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Switch, we are still in discussions with Sony about PlayStation and have nothing to confirm. We would love to work with Sony to bring players on PlayStation 4 into this ecosystem as well.”

Playstation was doing so nicely this generation. Cause now their console and games are amazing, but their attitude sucks towards letting people play games with friends.
