Nintendo has vehemently denied Miyamoto’s retirement. “This is absolutely not true,” a Nintendo spokesperson told Reuters. “There seems to have been a misunderstanding. He has said all along that he wants to train the younger generation.
“He has no intention of stepping down. Please do not be concerned.”
[Original article]In news that could send Nintendo’s profits into free fall the creator and mastermind behind some of Nintendo’s (if not all) greatest titles has announced that he is retiring.
Shigeru Miyamoto is the man behind such titles as Mario Bros, Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda and has rarely put a step wrong in one of the most glittering gaming careers in history.
However he’s now 59 years old and has decided that he doesn’t want to take on the lead role for any large titles and is retiring from that position. However he will stay on with Nintendo to work on side projects and smaller developments with some younger developers.
He feels the team he has developed will be able to continue the good work they have done over the past couple of years and he can move onto his first love which is hands on development of new IP’s.
Personally I wouldn’t put it past him to develop the next smash hit for Nintendo, a company that more than likely wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the games he developed.
His resignation however isn’t yet official and is more of a veiled threat right now, he wants to move onto his own new projects in early 2012 and while Nintendo will be panicking about handing their top IP’s onto someone new it’s not like they could even attempt to tell Miyamoto what he can and can’t do.
