MKX is becoming a DLC minefield

1 min read

DLC (Downloadable Content) has become synonymous with having to actually fork out extra cash instead of just getting nice, free updates.

However NetherRealm has reached a new low now by releasing a Season Pass – or Kombat Pack – for Mortal Kombat that costs a full $30 and includes 4 full DLC packs that will be delivered throughout the year. So a real Mortal Kombat fan has effectively paid $90 (R1050) to ensure they have all the MKX that they could ever want, except that was a lie.

It’s a month and 4 days since Mortal Kombat X was released and NetherRealm have now unveiled the Kold War skin pack that will add three new skins to your game for a mere $3.99 and they have also announced an upcoming Brazil pack for the same price.

Both packs are not included in your Kombat Pack purchase and will cost you extra. Yes that season pass will not cover this DLC and that to me just feels like a roundhouse kick to the face. Granted it is only costumes and doesn’t change the game in any way, but it still feels like a cheap shot.

What do you all think about this? Is it a fair way for Warner and the Netherrealm to keep an income coming in or are they really just taking the piss now?

You know, yesterday I purchased The Witcher 3 as a physical copy, inside the one case is a little card(about half the size of a postcard) on it, there is a little note from the developer… It thanks the gamer for purchasing the game and states that as a valued customer, the gamer will receive 16 free pieces of DLC… So I’m going to ask this… If I’ve purchased a game, did I not support the developer by forking out my hard earned moolayousters? If so, and the game spent 3/4 years in development, does that not cover their overall costs, hence the pricing of the game… This is despicable….

Problem with those 16 free DLC is that they already have a season pass for Paid DLC so what do you think the overall quality of the free DLC is going to be? I believe paying for worthwhile content. ME skin packs are not worth it but ME story DLC are.

I agree, I mean the “DLC” expansion packs that they mentioned are optional extras and yes, the 16 free pieces of DLC are small in comparison, but at least that is something they give away, it’s not a pay for this exclusive kind of deal….I’ll pay for tried and tested DLC story packs that are substantial to the weight of the game, but I will not pay for a skin that makes my character looks a little bit different….

The Expansion Pass is different than the 16 free DLC. At CD Projekt Red they don’t believe gamers should pay extra for little things like outfits, weapons, armor, little things like that. Only bigger things like the Season Pass/Expansion should cost money because they are worth more and impact the game as opposed to a couple extra armor or weapons.

The Expansion Pack adds on an additional 30 hours of gameplay and increases the already huge landscape. I’d say thats worth the money.

I have already found the first two DLC to be a major disappointment even if I knew it was going to be armour. They could have just as easily added it into the game and I believe no one would have even noticed. Still the game rocks!

Well of course the first DLC isn’t much, its armor given early in the game. It will easily be replaced later on, its good to help start out though. Its the thought that counts though, they didn’t ask $3.99 for it so who cares right?

I understand but they made such a yahoo over the fact that 16 DLC will be free. Just sad about the quality.

          • Asura Drago

            May 21, 2015 at 21:24

Well keep in mind this is only the first set, and its clearly aimed at an early level, the armor anyway. There will be more in the future so I’m sure it will be better. Plus its free, can’t complain.

            May 21, 2015 at 21:30

Not complaining but merely pointing out that they should not be haling a feature that is actually not that good in the future. People focus a lot on what is said. Oculus rift for instance is shouting praises that their VR device won’t make people motion sick. They are going to have some angry people when it does (and believe it will).Every second bloody post for the witcher pre-launch was 16 Free DLC .. love us .. DRM free .. love us instead of sticking to why people love Witcher in the first place. The compelling story and depth of character. They pretty much said almost nothing about that this time round. Luckily it is good.

Oh and GoG Galaxy sucks. 😛

Oh I know you aren’t complaining. I’m not that familiar with the Oculus Rift aside that its a VR helmet thing, or what GoG Galaxy means.

            May 21, 2015 at 21:43

GoG galaxy is the non DRM digital distributor for CDPR. It is supposed to be an alternative to Steam etc etc. If you bought the collectors Edition you have no choice but to use this application as you can’t choose to rather just have the game on steam.

Actually I thought that letter was a nice touch to all the fans and the reason for the 16 DLC items it to point a sticky finger at the people milking the industry for DLC with clothing packs and sword packs etc etc. and thus giving it for “free” instead of following the trend. from what I heard the real dlc is all story based and I don’t mind paying for that.

I agree, one of the reasons I like cd projekt is that they started the company in a pirate kind of way before they got their name, what makes it cool is that they know that when a game is good, it’ll sell itself, you don’t have to add drm or dlc to accomplish that, for instance if I bought the game, I could borrow it to a friend, they can install it, play it and(with me nagging them or out of their own) buy the game for themselves, it used to work well back in the day, no reason it shouldn’t now… Also, one of their main mottos is to provide you with cool goodies when you purchase the game, unlike pirates that can only supply shady copies of a game with no guarantee that it’ll work…

Though they really should’ve seen it coming early on already, I really feel for the people who got suckered in on this. I know how it feels to have the “optional” DLC around you slowly squeeze you out of the game unless you fork out the cash.

I learnt my lesson with Battlefield 3 and their neverending DLC and annual releases and I’ll never go back to that franchise again.

DLCs, Pre-orders for added features, Day one patches, Steam updates before you can be allowed to play,Season passes,Expansions, paid for online gaming accounts, Exclusive bundles…

…all factors preventing you from enjoying the full experience despite paying ludicrous amounts for the game in the 1st place.

Then SA still has load shedding on top of that, which intentionally kicks in just before you reach an in-game achievement.

The gaming industry is way too commercialised these days.It all sounds like a best selling, multi-platinum Justin Bieber song.

Usually I’m the first to defend MK/netherrealm, but they’ve gone too far now, in my opinion… I pre-ordered the game, got a slight discount, it came with goro (so saved R73 there also…) and got it for R599, which I felt was decent enough. Then I got the Kombat pack for R439, which seemed a bit steep for 4 characters and 15 skins… The kombat pack description goes as follows: “Includes 4 playable characters and skin packs… …also includes Samurai Pack skins… ” so they are quite specific… Arguably you could see the “and skin packs” line as vague (it doesn’t say 4 characters skins and 4 skin packs), so that’s maybe why people are pissed off, even though it does kinda say 4 skin packs… All I know is I’m done giving them money at this point… All the kombat pack will really end up saving you is maybe like probably R100 max (if you would’ve bought “the samurai pack” – which I probably wouldn’t have normally)… Screw this money grabbing DLC nonsense… I fear that this kind of thing is slowly leading to a gaming market crash – can’t rip off customers forever, eventually (or soon) the trust will fall away and they will stop spending in general…

Except the fact that thousands of people have preordered the game, and thousands more will buy the future DLC down the line; you probably will, too. So, what gives them incentive to stop their practice if it sells?

I will say this, if you read the details included with the Kombat Pass it does specifically say what all it covers, which is just 4 DLC packs. Does not say that it will include any other additional DLC’s. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the frustration, but they do tell you what is covered in the Kombat Pass, which in this case, is not every DLC. Exhibit B: The Kombat Pack is not a seasons pass, it is a pack of 4 characters and 15 skins that is clearly listed in it’s description. Exhibit C: You don’t need vanity skins to play the game.
