CSGO

This weekend saw the culmination of hard work and dedication as the MLG Columbus CS:GO Major qualifier came to an end. Eight teams would eventually leave the qualifier having qualified for the $1 million Valve Major happening in April in Columbus, Ohio. Valve announced last week that they would be upping the ante for their CS:GO Majors pushing the prize pool to a guaranteed $1 million, and the MLG event will be the first ever Major to take place in North America.

The eight “legend” teams sat by this weekend as they watched the challengers hash it out on stage in Columbus. Teams from all over the world had just one final shot to make it, and of course all eyes were on North America as pride and patriotism would hopefully be a driving force. On Saturday the first five teams made it through to the Major, followed by the remaining qualifier spots being filled up yesterday evening.

Europe’s G2 eSports, Mousesports, Gambit Gaming made the cut on Saturday evening, followed by Team Liquid and Splyce from North America. Alredy there was hope as both Splyce and Team Liquid put up admirable performances throughout the weekend. On Sunday the pressure was on as the remaining North American teams found themselves in the loser bracket but eventually pulled through with both Counter-Logic Gaming and Cloud9 making it to the Major. Cloud9 were a hot topic over the weekend as their current form came into question by analysts and casters, and they barely scraped through in their final series against Australian team Renegades. The eighth and final team is Flipsid3 Tactics from CIS giving us the final 16 teams taking part in April.

The Major

Valve’s first Major of the year, and the first on North American soil, kicks off on March 29th. Teams will travel to the MLG Arena in Columbus, Ohio, a venue suited for any major eSports event. The MLG Arena has long been the battleground for some of the biggest eSports events, most notably Call of Duty. 2016s first Major will be a spectacle as teams such as Fnatic and EnvyUs hope to retain their form from 2016, with Brazilian team Luminosity still hoping for their first Major win.
