Modern Warfare 2 Gets Global Price Increase

We have just received a Press Release from Megarom that has regrettably informed us that Modern Warfare 2 is receiving a global price increase on the PC version of the game.

PC gamers have long enjoyed much lower prices than their console gamer friends but this won’t be the case with Modern Warfare 2 unfortunately. The good news (albeit not for everyone of course) is that there seems to be no change to console prices, so fear not if you were planning on buying it for Xbox 360 or Playstation 3.

Details after the jump.

The price point set for Modern Warfare 2 on PC will be R499.99 which puts it pretty close to the R699.99 console prices.

Why Activision has decided to only put up the PC price is beyond me but I do unfortunately get the sneaking suspicion that Activision just feels like PC gamers have been paying too little for quite long enough but of course there is no proof of that.

Here’s the full press release:

FOURWAYS, SOUTH AFRICA – October 13th, 2009 – Megarom Interactive (Pty) Ltd. South Africa’s leading importer and distributor of interactive video games, announced that due to the standardised global pricing strategy released today regarding the PC version of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, the South African recommended retail price therefore would be R499.99 on release date.

This global price strategy has already been affected on international retail websites with the price-point in the USA being set at $59.99 and in the UK at £44.99.

The standard edition of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 remains at the previously indicated recommended retail price of R699.99.

Activision’s price increases are going to lead to the death of modern PC gaming (classics such as starcraft, counterstrike, etc. will always be played by someone somewhere)

Well, that cock-smoker said that he wants to take the fun
out of gaming. He’s definitely on the right track.
On the other hand, seeing that horrible 3 hour long movie-tie-ins usually go for about R450, R499 is not really such
    a stretch to the imagination.

If anything, this is promoting piracy.

cant wait until cross platforming becomes possible, I’ve bought the last 2 titles on X-Box and PC, this is proving to be a bit expensive. Now even more so.

So does this mean that I have to pay the increased price on a pre-order from BT games, even though I already paid R360 for it?

No mail received from BT games yet. Will drop a comment here if I get any feedback from them. Not gonna poke the beast though.

(PS the new site doesn’t hold my Name and mail address anymore, is there anyway to make so I don’t have to enter it each time I comment?)

it’s ok because pc gamers will just boycott AMD. Game devs don’t make games on consoles they need programs. Consoles don’t support big companies like AMD who was close to going bankuprt. It’s pretty sad they had to steal money from intel.

pc gamer boycott AMD the whole pc industry feels it. This also means the cost of making games goes up! the cost of games goes up the cost of console game games goes up so do future consoles

Not sure what he means either. Maybe because AMD owns ATI? or that Nvidia may be quitting the GPU market.. What have you been sniffing dreamhunk :cwy:

The real money for companies like Activision is in console sales. It seems to me to be a round a bout way to kill off PC sales and then blame it on the cost of developing a game for a PC.

game devs don’t games on consoles they use a computer. *0% of console hardware comes AMD. SO pc gamers boycott AMD by by consoles.

Also half of actvision income comes from wow or blizzard. We Boycott blizzard there goes actision. I would hate to this but if game devs want to declare war on pc gamers they are going to lose.

    What a CROC of SHhhhhhhh!

How much does a effing console cost to buy? R3000 – R6000 how much does it cost to maintain a gaming PC (my machine input is sitting at R15000 – This is a poor excuse for a greedy company. YES! Console games should be more expensive as it is a once of price to get the console. This will just promote piracy in the long run with more support going towards hacked servers. FKN idiots…

Ahah! so thats why they are implementing their own match making severs! It’s so that pirates can’t host their own matches (because the pirates refuse to pay such a ridiculous price) and they therefore can’t play online as IW.net(the match making servers owned by Infinity ward) will block the pirates :pirate: . Leaving Activision to rake in the profits and raise game prices.

Well, time to break out the cracks if I really want this game. I am a 50 year old gamer, and if some douche bag of a company wants to rip me off I can rip right back. Been it I.T. since 1981, write code, and build systems as part of my own business, and only play P.C. games. I have plenty of experience to get past protection, and I don’t have a guilt complex about it, so no lectures about stealing etc. I work hard for my money, and I don’t mind paying a fair price for something, just the same as I charge my clients a fair price for services rendered with negotiation. But when these electronic entertainment companies think that the rest of us are a bunch of morons, and want to make a fast buck, so their executives can live the high life, then roll out the cracks. When the game is in a bargain bin for R50.00, and if I am still playing it, or it is worth keeping, I’ll buy it. This is how I deal with rip-offs, either they listen, or they feel it in their pocket.
