Mojang’s ending development on Scrolls

Under Microsoft’s helm, Minecraft developer Mojang had more than one game in active development. Had. Mojang has now confirmed that it’s canned further development on its card battling strategy game Scrolls, leaving the developer as no more than a Minecraft factory for now.

“After much deliberation,” says Mojang in a statement, “we’ve come to an important decision that we’d like to share: Echoes will be the last major content patch for Scrolls. We won’t be adding features or sets from now on, though we are planning to keep a close eye on game balance.”
The game will continue to work until at least this time next year for those who’ve invested time, energy and money in to the game.

Here’s the rest of the statement:

“Scrolls will still be available to purchase for the time being, and our servers will run until at least July 1st, 2016. All future proceeds will go towards keeping Scrolls playable for as long as possible.

The launch of the Scrolls beta was a great success. Tens of thousands of players battled daily, and many of them remain active today. Unfortunately, the game has reached a point where it can no longer sustain continuous development.

We’ve had a great time working on Scrolls, and appreciate every last player who’s downloaded our game. Extra big thanks to the most dedicated members of our community; some of you have logged in almost every day since release and dedicated a large portion of your time to dominating the leaderboards and taking care of new players. We salute you, honourable scrolldiers.”

It’s a little under a year since Microsoft bought Mojang, though it would not be remiss to say that Redmond acquired the Scandinavian solely to get the rights for the unbelievably popular Minecraft. It’s incredibly likely that Mojang will be 100% focused on making Minecraft a better experience, along with porting it to the one or two deives that still aren’t able to run some version of the popular block breaking game.

Scrolls, of course, is the game that caused Bethesda to lawyer up, claiming that Mojang’s card game would invite confusion between it and the Elder Scrolls. While everybody laughed about how stupid Bethesda’s lawyers were at the time, we now know that there’s an Elder Scrolls card game in the vein of Hearthstone coming: Elder Scrolls Legends.

You’re still living in the 90’s if you think Microsoft would pull that shit.
