Mojang’s Scrolls expected to release end of November

SCROLLS

When I say Mojang, you’ll more than likely think building, tree-punching, and of course, hipster-visuals. The company is of course, very well known for their ridiculously addictive Minecraft. They have been working on a card game called Scrolls for quite some time now. Never heard of or forgotten all about it? It’s understandable, considering that Microsoft purchasing Mojang seems to be hogging the spotlight. That may change soon, as Scrolls is expected to be released in late November.

Here’s the launch trailer from May 2013 to give you an idea of what the game is about.

Scrolls is the latest game from Mojang – creators of Minecraft.

You use the power of creatures, spells, and ancient machines to gain the edge in battle, deploying your forces by using scrolls: some rare, some common, some brutal, some tactical. Over time you’ll develop a unique army and the skills to manipulate it. Eventually, you’ll face off against other players, proving your might on the battlefield.

Although the system is different, I am strongly reminded of Blizzard’s Hearthstone based purely on the fact that it is a card game. I have a feeling Scrolls may not be as easy to learn though.

Owen Hill from Mojang says the game should be out by the end of next month (Joystiq via Touch Arcade).

“The guesstimate is late November, but we’re not going to release it until it’s ready, if you know what I mean.”

The game is already in open beta. The official release is just a way to take it out of that phase, but that doesn’t mean the developers will be skimping on releasing content according to Henrik Pettersson, a producer and artist working on the game.

“Final release just means we’re taking it out of beta, but we want to continue development after that. That means more cards, more units, and more features. The most recent update, for example, introduced 56 new Scrolls, new spells and mechanics, and a new market for players to trade and sell items.”

The game will be available on PC and Mac, as well as iOS and Android tablets. It will only cost $5. It seems quite interesting, I just don’t know if it will catch on as well as Minecraft did. The games are completely different, and as far as I’m concerned, appeal to different audiences.

What do you think? Have you played Scrolls? Will you be picking it up when it is (eventually) released?
