Mortal Kombat X Kollector’s Editions execute a fatality on your wallet

Mortal Kombat X is coming IN April. It’s one of my most anticipated titles in 2015 – mostly because I’m aching for a good fighting game, but also because it seems to be taking the new mould set by the Mortal Kombat 9 reboot, and making it better. Faster, tighter and more fluid, Mortal Kombat X could be the best game in the series. And like most great big, anticipated AAA games these days, it’s getting a range of different special editions. Here are the four, confusing special editions coming.

The Mortal Kombat X: Kollector’s Edition by Coarse

  • Exclusive Scorpion figurine and Certificate of Authenticity, designed by Coarse. Coarse has been recognized in Collector and Designer figure communities for their artistic approach, dedication to detail, and unique storytelling through sculpture.
  • In-game Gold Scorpion Skin, inspired by the Coarse figurine
  • The Kombat Pack, which includes access to four add-on playable characters from Klassic Kombatants to Iconic guest characters
  • Available for PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft
  • MSRP: $149.99
  • It’s exclusive to the US, so YOU CAN’T HAVE IT.

The Mortal Kombat X Kollector’s Edition

  • Imported from Europe
  • Scorpion Statue
  • Exclusive Steel Pack and Steel Card
  • Mortal Kombat X: Blood Ties Comic Book Volume 1
  • In-game Gold Scorpion Skin
  • The Kombat Pack
  • Available for PS4 and Xbox One
  • MSRP: $179.99

The Mortal Kombat X Premium Edition

  • Available via download only
  • The Kombat Pack
  • Available for PS4, Xbox One, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC
  • MSRP: $89.99

The Mortal Kombat X Limited Edition

  • Available for pre-order exclusively at GameStop in the US. No word on local retailer availability.
  • Exclusive Scorpion Skin — this skin design, inspired by the Cold War, is a collaboration between NetherRealm Studios and a fan artist from the MKKollective.com, a crowd-sourced destination where Mortal Kombat enthusiasts can upload, submit and share their MK-related art, images, cosplay, music and videos.
  • The Kombat Pack
  • Available for PS4 and Xbox One
  • MSRP: $94.99

You can take a look at how that Scorpion figurine was created in this video. We’ve also contacted the local distributors to see which – if any – of these superfluous and expensive collector’s editions will make their way to our stores. [Update]

We’ll be getting the Kollectors Edition, Premium Edition and Limited Edition – so it’s just the Coarse one we’ll miss out on. I think it’s ugly, personally – and prefer the more traditional Scorpion in the regular Kollector’s Edition.

Pre-ordering the game nets you Goro as a playable character, which is an egregious way of securing pre release sales – because who doesn’t wanna clobber dudes with a four-armed titan?

I really badly want that Homeworld CE, but seeing as how our post office still doesn’t work it’s too risky to order the thing.

I think the Coarse statue is friggin beautiful. The design looks like it ought to come from Batman: The Animated Series.
