When Street Fighter IV was originally released, it was curiously missing the feature that makes playing fighting games online so a much fun; a robust spectator mode that emulates the arcade experience of having a bunch of dude’s trash-talking in the background. Thankfully it looks like Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat won’t be making that same misstep. Mortal Kombat’s spectator mode is called “King of the Hill,” and it looks fantastic.

Detailed in the video below, you get to see King of the Hill which dials spectator mode up a notch, showing the current fight on a virtual cinema screen, with the imminent combatants watching on in their (Xbox 360 and PS3) avatar forms – Mystery Science theatre 3000 style. They can boo, cheer, throw tomatoes, and even rate the match before them. Best of all? Even with all that supreme superfluousness, It maintains that silky-smooth 60 frames per second you expect from modern fighting games. Sexy! If they manage t keep the online mostly lag-free, this could be one of the most fun fighters this generation. We might not be getting that delicious Tournament Edition, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun, right?

Mortal Kombat releases in South Africa on April 29, for PS3 and Xbox 360.
