ps2-complicated

So yesterday, I decided after a long debate with a friend of mine to sell him my PS3. It was an old 60G PS3 and he wanted it for the backwards compatibility. So with the money I went and “upgraded” to the new 80G PS3 bundled with 2 Dualshock 3’s and a copy of Gran Turismo Prologue. All was good and I was when happy I got home.

The happiness ended the moment I opened the box and unpacked it, because as I really should have known they ship PS3’s with the bare essentials. The console is not even HD ready out the box and that’s right, I forgot to buy an HDMI cable. Besides that, just the experience of unpacking the box was disheartening. No headset – seriously, Sony Bluetooth headsets are so cheap these day, why not just throw in a cheap one with some ps3 branding and an Ethernet cable, that would be nice too.

So after my trip back to the store to pick up another Ethernet cable, HDMI cable and a cheap Bluetooth headset I was now ready for online gaming – well, not really. At this point i would just like to note that in the box of a Premium Xbox 360 system, you get a headset, Ethernet cable and an HD solution cable as well. But that aside I finally get to plug the PS3 in, gaming goodness couldn’t be far away now…

But it was. Firstly of course, it’s a new console so it needed an update, unfortunately the update took an hour. With that finally done and another 10 minutes or so to set up my profile, I’m was now ready to game, so I put Gran Turismo in.

“Oh look it’s installing”, “oh and there’s no option to not install”, that’s fantastic, so even if I want to just quickly test the game i had to install it, that’s super. So after what was the longest install of my life – around 25 mins, I could now play games. Too bad then that After 3 hours worth of cables, installs, updates and whatever I really didn’t feel like it anymore.

This all did however get me thinking this morning. I thought the installs were necessary because the “read speed” of Blu-ray Discs was not great, but Motorstrom runs fine, and it doesn’t install? I could run off my conspiracy theory of how Sony know they have issues with the optical drives in the PS3 and in turn have introduced installs to try and extend the life of the drives, instead I’ll just ask that they make installs optional.

The sad ending to all of this is that Christmas is coming and a lot of people may be receiving PS3’s for gifts, I just think it really sucks and borders on unacceptable that all the stuff needed to enjoy your PS3 in not in the box.

Eh if you already had a PS3, then surely you already had a HDMI cable (or new that you’d need one eventually) as well as online account (or knew that you’d need one). AFAIK, you don’t need HDMI cables to play games. You just need them when you want to stream HDCP content… ala blu ray movies. So if you just quickly wanted to “check out” GTP, your trip to get a HDMI cable was your our fault

As for the rest of your rant…. sux to be you I guess. Don’t really see the point in upgrading from a 40GB to a 80GB anyway.

Oh and your are you refering to the 60G or 40G model. The 40G model ain’t backward compatible so it sux to be your friend as well I guess.

o so true… i can see all those kids around the world in absolute tears because mommy and daddy bought them a ps3 and it didn’t come with any cables (make that hd cables) and they have to wait 25 mins (???) for an install.
the life of children nowadays is at an all time low. that must be way kids go loco, its not the games, its the thoughtless and callous parents that buy them ‘soul destroying’ ps3’s and ruin christmas.

You knew about all of these issues before buying the console.

You only have yourself to blame for poor planning…

Most of the people today do research before they buy and with all the mud-slinging going on between the fans it’s very hard to be uninformed about each console’s short comings…

The purpose of the article is clearly, once again, just there to be negative about the PS3, in true lazygamer tradition.

Its an HD system, id like it to be that right out of the box without extra purchases, especially becauseits the most expensive system on the market.

Lazy, lets just recoup what we’ve leant over the past two years.

The PS3 does not come with a HDMI cable.

    Some games require installs.

Eurogamer says most games look better on the 360 than it does on the PS3 because they use space age technology.

The xbox has uber integrated interwebs.

We’ve known this for a while now. We’ve known this for two years now. In short….

    W.E. K.N.O.W.

I don’t see what the use is of reminding everyone on a weekly basis. Unless it’s posted as smackdown or to get hits, in which case… please think of something new as I have no problem with some good smackdown.

What confuses me is comments that I as a PS3 owner should feel hard done by Sony. That by some means, I’ve been cheated in wasting my money. Here is the news flash. I’ve bought a PS3 two years ago. As I sit here now, I couldn’t give a rats ass over the 6k I drop for it. As I sit here now, I can easily go and buy 1.7k uber gfx interwebs enabled xbox on the scarps that’s left for the month. But I don’t want to. I don’t want a xbox.

We are talking about 2 year bloody old consoles here. Not Ferrari’s, Lamborghinis or 10 carat diamond rings. I think right about now it’s a good time to discuss gaming instead of bitching about HDMI cables or installs. Seriously.

    it’s really quite simple.

PS3.. you have NO excuse about the HDMI cable, you knew about that. We can’t use the rumble argument against them because the 80GB comes with it anyway. If it doesn’t, you’re getting old stock so you better ensure that it’s at a discounted price. Installs are there, deal with it.

360… yeah yeah, RROD, but again, only an issue if you get old stock. My issue with the 360 is that Wireless is not out the box and the rediculous price of R900 big ones is simply scandolous. The local live thing is not an issue except for that GoW2 issue which was quite frankly a DICK MOVE on MS’s part.

    There! Problem solved.

Perhaps I should explain that just a tad better. As soon as a really AAA multi platform game launches, LGZA is heavily predictable. 99% of the time the first article about the game is “xxxx game requires a install on the PS3” or “xxxx looks fucking 10x better on the 360, fuck yeah” instead of initial reviews, photos of midnight launches or a general discussion about the game.

Now image the best Hollywood actor putting up the best confused facial expression. That’s me when I open the LG.co.za on launch morning of an AAA multi platformer with my first cuppa in hand.

LOL.. Love the flawed article… The firmware update is not mandatory unless you want to go online and being an 80GB it would have been updated enough already to play GT5P without needing any new firmware.

If you bought a new XBOX and you wanted to go online, from what I remember hooking mine up, I had to give false information on my location/country and only then I could use my SA Credit Card to buy MS points, but all in all if it was my first time trying to buy an XBL membership to play online, it would have taken me a lot longer than the quick and painless PSN registration and they accept SA CC’s… 😉

When I wanted to cancel my XBL subscription, they wanted me to phone in for it to an International UK number. They would not let me do it online, but my CC expired the following month, so I let lapse.. To this day they still send me mail every month telling me to update my CC details to bill me 😉

Can you still use your SA CC to buy MS Points? Or is MS still giving SA the old shaft…

I think the reason a Ethernet cable is missing is because the PS3 comes standard with a wifi connection, and these days, most ADSL models come with built in wifi, so imo that is why it aint there. As for the HDMI, would you want a crappy one that they give you for free or just go out and get a decent grade cable that you will be happy with?

I bought my PS3 and was up and running in less that 30 mins. I knew what I needed when I bought my PS3 and I had no regrets.

i love my ps3 but the point lazy is trying to make is that it isn’t quite what you would expect when buying a new ps3 while having an xbox360. not getting an HD cable and headset out of the box (especially a 80GB model) is just ridiculous. if sony made a standard ps3 headset when the console launched and put in every box, people on psn wont sound like robots and we wont get so much feedback and bad voice quality.

installing games really sucks since no other console in history required it. going from xbox live to ps3 is a big pain since you dont have the treasured “join a friends current game without and invite” feature.

but i will also say that i’m tired of being shafted by MS over xbox live in SA & RROD

Gareth, the problem with a story like this, IMO I doubt anyone will take a story you write seriously again. Anyway, hope you enjoy the PS3.

Okay question. Why buy a brand new PS3 80GB if you can just get yourself a 80 GB HDD and install it without a warranty void?
