Naruto and his balls

The Naruto manga, is over. Sort of. But clearly, the video games have plenty of life left in them still. Bandai Namco has been releasing an annual Naruto game for ages-no-jutsu now, with the majority of them being about as unimpressive as an anime filler arc.  With old-gen out and dead for good in 2015, expect the series to hop on over to the current crop of high definition consoles. And PC. Yes, don’t forget PC dammit!

Bandai Namco has announced that Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm will be headed to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Here’s a pair of screenshots from the project to give you an idea of the Baysplosion-no-jutsu that will be on offer:

I’ve always considered the Naruto games to have some of the very best visuals in the industry today, as those games have boasted crisp and gorgeous cel-shading graphics that look too good to be true. But beyond that, the series has failed to innovate. The gameplay has remained stagnant, using a simple system of basic combos and movement that is augmented by a two-jutsu system to flesh out the combat.

On the one hand, it’s a great system for the uninitiated. On the other hand, longtime fans are starting to get bored. And as much as I want more from the Naruto games, I don’t want them to become like the Dragon Ball Z games which require over 9000 command prompts to allow Krillen to quickly die.

What the Naruto games need, are to be more than just mere fighting games. They’ve experimented with different modes in the past, but now is the time to commit. And to not make some of them so damn god-awful in every design aspect possible. A Naruto game that includes exploration, old-school Streets Of Rage brawling, massive boss encounters and a core fighting game system?

You’d better believe that I’ll buy something like that.

I’ve always loved these games! While I agree they have gotten very stagnant. I still enjoy inviting some Bro’s over, grabbing some beers and trash talking each other while we kick each others ass’s in Naruto fighting games. Honestly I don’t really care about the story element of the game…the fighting mode is superb, it just needs some tweaking and afew more combo’s and jutsu moves to add variety. If this one has that added, its a Day 1 purchase for me.

Ah damn, I got all (read: most) of the others on the Xbox 360, now I have to go over to PC… *sigh*. Hopefully you can complete the entire manga in game now.
