Need for Speed Shift 2 Dev : GT5 and Forza Graphics “Bland”

Shift2

EA recently announced a sequel to their arcade-with-sim-aspects racer, Need for Speed Shift 2, developed once again by Slightly Mad Studios. I personally think that – even though they’re different games, just under the same brand – the announcement came too soon after the release of Criterion’s Need for Speed hot Pursuit. I digress though, because that’s not what this post is about.

In an interview with OXM, Shift 2’s producer Marcus Nilsson has said that the upcoming sequel will run at 30 fps – but will look much more vibrant than “bland” Sim racers GT5 and Forza.

"You have to make a choice with today’s tech. Either you go for – and this is harsh but it’s what I think – the bland graphics of GT and Forza, or you try to push the bar for what consoles can do," he said, adding  "That’s what Slightly Mad is doing, and hence the decision was made to aim for 30 frames."

You know what this means, right? It means Forza and GT fans can stop going for each others’ throats, and rally together to hate on Need for Speed Shift. Is the enemy of my enemy not my friend?

    Neon lights confirmed!

I think they should rather focus on the steering lag and forget the graphics for now. I really enjoyed Shift but the steering lag made it a missed opportunity.

Quite bold claims by this guy, best of luck with backing up your statements Marcus

to an extent i agree with the dev. (Well, on Forza, won’t comment on GT5 until i see it).

Turn 10 aimed for 60fps with all that physics math happening in the background and got a certain look.

CodeMasters aimed for 30fps with Dirt/F1, less math going on with the physics and achieved a more “vibrant” look.

So, i have no doubt that an NFS title could look better than Forza.

I agree with this article. I now hate the devs of need for speed shift, insted of turn 10.

With certain PC mods, F1 may look vibrant. Without them, the Sepia filter is a bit too much.

    Awesome game btw.

Maybe they should focus on their own game, rather than berating the Market leaders? The first NFS: Shift was the buggiest, most unfinished excuse for a game I’ve ever had the displeasure of playing. Get the basics right before trying (and no doubt failing) to match GT or Forza. EA need to take a long, hard look at themselves.

weird really. “Forza sucks”, “No, GT5 sucks”, “Forza looks bad, 360 is bad”…” nah, ps3 is bad”….all this and now look…”Shut it Slighly mad, you’re dreaming”…etc.

Funny how all that bitchin about the 2 games and this company tries to challenge them both and Gt5 and FM fans WILL unite under this same banner. Still, GT and FM are full out sim, no? NFS is more arcade in every nature. Although from what piccies I have seen shaping up, Dirt 3 and this do look rather nice at a glance.
