Need for Speed will need an online connection

NFS

Need for Speed is coming as a series reboot, because the narrative in a game about driving has become convoluted to a point where it needs to be refreshed, obviously. It seems to be an amalgamation of everything that’s come before, with a great big bunch of Need for Speed Underground influence. It’s got a lot of people very excited. There’s some news about it that may temper that excitement. It may be an always online game.

That’s according to a relatively vague tweet from the official Need for Speed account that suggests that the new Need for Speed will require a persistent online connection.

It seems it’ll need an online connection for social things, making it not too dissimilar to Need for Speed: Rivals which also needed an online connection to get the most of.

Of course, it will have a single player experience, but you’ll probably miss out on half the fun if your’e not connected to the internet.

It seems those hoping for a pure SP experience are going to be in for disappointment, but it all depends on how it’s all handled. We’ll get more details at E3, obviously – and my hope is that EA learns from Ubisoft’s mistakes with The Crew. Nobody wants an always online racer.

Ag, it’s 2015. This doesn’t really bother me much. In the end it’s going to be all about whether they actually got the game right.

That said, it may be different for console gamers, come to think of it. On PC being always online has become normal for most. So they might alienate a few console gamers with this.

I have been saying for a while now that this is going to be the norm so it is easier to just get used to it than to whine about it. That being said I do feel sorry for those without a decent connection.

Yeah, I think it’s decidedly different to being ‘online always’ compared to ‘interactive online always’… By that, I mean the difference between simply being connected and being connected in the same world with others. The ‘with others’ part can be tedius in some games – and The Crew was 1 of them! Not to mention it’s what breaks servers… Just ask DriveClub and The Crew about their launch… o_O

I really don’t have an issue with always online… except for when my DSL goes down and then I can’t even launch the game to play SP, that’s when I have a SERIOUS issue with it.

That being said, I have a cell phone, mobile data, and a knowledge of computers that will allow me to use that to connect.

There’s always a way to get online, even if you don’t particularly like it.

True. My DSL was off for a week and I still managed to use Steam through other ways. It wasn’t convenient, but it worked.

This bothers me. Living with a cap connection at home we only use the net for necessities and playing a racing game isn’t a necessity. :/

And there it is… Bye bye NFS… See ya later. I have online, but the thing is I’ve played The Crew – another online only game. It’s not great… In fact, it’s decidedly meh. And that has just put me off the whole online only racing experience…

NFS – you gonna have to blow my socks off and WOW me to get me to pay attention from here-on in…

Yeah, they sold it as a ‘roadtrip across America’ type game… But it just isn’t. We see glimpses but never the whole picture. And, not to mention, the “online only server problems, thus not being able to connect and play” issues that plagued the first few weeks.

Like I said, NFS is gonna have to do it 1000 times better in order to tempt me back into an online only experience in racing. And I just don’t see that happening with the NFS franchise. But I’ll definitely give ’em a chance and wait and see – keep my eye on it till then. But pre-ordering, I ain’t!

The thing for me with The Crew some missions are so freaking difficult and no one joins a game except for friends and most people don’t like the game so no actual friends are ever playing I just got stuck and never tried again.

That being said I still enjoyed it but it could’ve been so much more.

Rivals online was a shobby attempt and it could’ve also been so much better but still a step in the right direction imo

I think we all can agree here that the game wont be playable for at least the first 3 weeks of release, due to server issues of course. Happens every time…

PLUS lets be realistic here, that means you wont be able to play time game in about 5 years time either, because we all know how EA loves shutting down servers of games that are older than 3 years.. ESPECIALLY if its yearly releases like these.

Also does “a more rewarding experience” refer to the same experience people had with SimCity? Same song and dance will happen if it’s a mess. People will demand NFS to be playable offline. EA will say it isn’t possible, then after a few months of messing around with servers they have no knowledge of running properly a offline patch will be made available.

That’s a very good point. And with Sim City it was “impossible” to switch off the always online function – until they just switched it off.
The always online thing did make SimCity a hassle to run, but that’s because it was badly done.

Also an online connection will enable them to show you ads for DLC just like MK does. That way you can buy all the decals, paint, rims, hoods, etc. in a flash.

went to a track once to drive around, surprisingly found that real driving was way easier than circuit racing on pc, with both the wheel and controller… scarier, but easier.
circuit racing on pc/console has been ruined for me.

open world stuff and casual racers are more fun for me now. get rid of the frustration of real world driving.

Do these guys never learn? Look at what happened with NFS: Rivals and Drive Club. This is a kak idea. What made the original NFS games great for me was the SP campaign. Racing with friends happened with 2 controllers and a split screen. There is no fun in racing against someone you can’t punch in the arm when you beat them… They trying really hard to turn this into CoD…
