Need For Speed’s first big patch will fix rubber-banding AI

NFS-Rubber-bands

The latest reboot of Need For Speed isn’t a bad game. It’s not the best game either, but it has potential to be better now that developer Ghost Games can sit back and fine-tune their creation. While the core game is solid like a rock, it does have some issues to deal with that can sour the gameplay experience. Like that f***ing prat, Spike. I hate him soooooooo much.

Anyway, that’s not what the first major patch for Need For Speed will focus on. Not yet anyway, but I’ll soon have my way when it comes to dealing with Spike…

I’m getting distracted again, so let’s jump back on topic here. Need For Speed isn’t the hardest racing game around, but it does have some rubber-banding issues. If you have no idea what that term means, then here’s the skinny:

Rubber-banding allows AI-controlled racing opponents to catch up to you real quick on the circuit, even though your vehicle has more horses under the hood and should logically be performing laps around them.

Or imagine it this way: Your Mitsubishi Lancer can easily overtake any vehicle on the road, but doing so will transform your opponent’s car into Sebulba’s pod racer from Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, at least until they catch up to you.

Several racing games have had that problem in the past, although Ghost Games say that they will address this with “more balanced ‘AI Catch Up’ . Here’s the full list of fixes on the way:

  • More balanced ‘AI Catch Up’
  • New Wrap Editor features:
  • Mirror functionality
  • Improved colour picker
  • Hoonicorn and Morohoshi-San Diablo
  • Gifted upon completion of their respective narrative threads
  • First look at neons
  • Early in development version on Morohoshi-San’s Diablo
  • REP increase 50-60
  • 3x Trophies & Achievements
  • New daily challenges
  • x30 new pre-set wraps
  • General bugs, tweaks and improvements

Hopefully the next big patch, will allow players to turn their in-game smartphones off, in order to escape the millions of phone calls that you get every ten seconds. Need For Speed is out right now on Xbox One and PS4. It’ll be hitting PC early next year.

I doubt it. It might come….much much later when EA wants to save money by shutting down the server, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for it coming soon.

I been playing this a LOT lately and absolutely love the game I must say! It is faaar from perfect but it really does feel like a proper old school NFS game absolutely love the arcade racing game play they implemented, customization is for me the best in any racing game I played. Best arcade racing game since Most Wanted for me. Only two issues I have with the game are:

    1. Rubber banding which is frustrating to say the least as you can’t make a mistake but that’s getting fixed.
    2. Game being online always which is totally unnecessary there are barely any online features really!

Oh and Fu***ing Spike if I ever see that actor in real life I shall punch him square in the face!

I loathe this type of thing on TV. Mates GF, years ago, made us watch Jackass: the movie, cause she said we always choose, her turn. She laughed and laughed. I did not.

I think there should be a new term used for on-line only single player games. People get confused, when I told a buddy that it had single player he thought it was COOL because he has no internet. He probably went and bought it.

They’ll probably call it “3rd world single player” and “1st world single player” just to rub it in even more.

Rubber Banding was always the thing I hated most in NFS games. I practised hard, I was miles ahead and I bin it on 2nd last turn and get overtaken by cars that were WAAAAAAY behind me. It spoiled an otherwise fun game.

I completely agree with you. It allows players that jump in day one to be just as “good” as players who have trained and exercised on the tracks…and who are actually just good.

I played NFSU2 and NFS Most Wanted to death and both games did it all the time with the AI, in track races. It was super, super annoying.

Not sure it applies to non electronic peoples, they must get their own skillz on

Well, they do actually apply it in some games on non-AI players. I’ve seen it. That’s a whole different level of irritation. The Crew does it, but a lot more gently and you can still build up decent leads if you’re good enough.
