New enemies and weapons detailed for Bloodborne: The Old Hunters

Oh the weather outside is delightful, but the FOMO is frightful. And since we’ve got no place to go, this back catalogue can blow! Yessir, Christmas is just around the corner, and what better way to ring in the end of the year than by throwing down one more time with some Victorian monsters? Bloodborne’s first and only expansion, The Old Hunters, arrives next week and it looks like you’ll be facing the deadliest monsters possible.

That’s according to producer Masaaki Yamagiwa, who shared a few details over on the PlayStation Blog.  Enemies such as the ancient hunter Brador and the Bell Holder. “Brador is an ancient Hunter and assassin once employed by the Healing Church who sits in a dark cell, waiting for something-or someone-with bell in hand,” Yamagiwa said.

And while exploring the new nightmare, beware of the Bell Holder. This massive enemy wields the Bell Axe and is one of the most formidable beasts you will face.

To survive, you’re going to need some new monster-hunting gear, such as the “sick and demented” Bloodletter that Brador wields. “This weapon assumes its true form after drawing upon the blood of its wielder,” Yamagiwa said.

In other words, you must plunge it into your own chest in order to unleash its true power.

If you’re looking to not make a blood donation however, there’s also a ranged option that goes by the name of the Gatling Gun. “A portable version of the stationary rapid-fire gun that Djura uses to rain down lead from the tower in Old Yharnam,” Yamagiwa explained.

While it is great for rapid-fire attacks, it is also cumbersome and goes through Quicksilver Bullets very quickly.

Lastly, there’s also a new rune to acquire, called The Beast’s Embrace:

After many failed experiments, this rune was forbidden from use. That did not stop its discovery from becoming the foundation of the Healing Church, however. Those brave, or foolish, enough to unleash the power of this rune take on a ghastly form and enjoy boosted transformation effects, especially when wielding a beast weapon.

Yamagiwa also outlined the steps necessary to access the Old Hunters content in Bloodborne:

  • Step 1: Defeat the boss of the Cathedral Ward and examine the altar in the back of the room to change the in-game time to night.
  • Step 2: Go to the Hunter’s Dream and receive the Eye of a Blood-drunk Hunter from a messenger.
  • Step 3: Go to the Oedon Chapel and leave via the left-hand exit to enter the square.
  • Step 4: Go to the right-hand end of the square to trigger an event. This event will take you to the new area: the Hunter’s Nightmare. Lighting the lamp in the new area will allow you to travel to and from the area via an Awakening Headstone in the Hunter’s Dream

Remember, you’ll also need to have your Bloodborne game up to date. That’s a  hefty update, around 9 gigglebytes in size that’ll prepare the game for the larger download of The Old Hunters tomorrow.

I know the feeling I keep on jumping between games on my puny 500GB. Deleting this game to install that game, and vice versa! It’s making me CRAZY!!! I just wish Sony would go the external drive route like MS did. Id be SO happy!

Hehe. I know. But it really should have come standard with at least a 1TB. 500GB is tiny.

The update actually contains all the data for the expansion, if you look at previous Souls titles just before a expansion comes out there is a huge update. Essentially you already downloaded the expansion. If you look in the Playstation store the expansion file size is 10MB. It just contains the unlock file
