New Tribes Game Announced

tribes With their inclusion in Halo Reach and the upcoming Killzone 3, Jetpacks have once again been brought to the forefront of multiplayer gaming. It would make sense then, to resurrect the granddaddy of jetpack-based multiplayer, Tribes.

Set in the Earthsiege/Starsiege universe, Tribes was particularly technical – and insanely fun – shooter for its time. Players were equipped with Jetpacks and had to use all manner of weapons and vehicles to counter the verticality afforded by said Jetpacks. Tribes 2, in particular was some of the best multiplayer fun I had in my youth.

Hi-Rez Studios(who I’ve never heard of), the folks behind PC MMO Global Agenda (which I’ve never heard of), has bought the rights to the Tribes – and summarily announced a brand new Tribes game; Tribes Universe, an MMO.

The game will use the Unreal Engine, with massive online battles being the focus. The developers promise ground and air vehicles, a "full persistent world", "huge outdoor maps" and, naturally, the aforementioned Jetpacks.

The game will undergo alpha testing in early 2001, with no word on proposed release date, or platforms. I’m going to assume that it’ll be a PC-only affair though.
