New Witcher 3 patch finally fixes tiny text

The Witcher 3, like any other open-world game of this size, suffers from a few hiccups. CD Projekt Red has been steadily patching things up though, with almost bi-weekly patches since launch. The biggest issue with the game (according to the loud outcry) rests with the in-game text. It’s a little on the small side for some, but thankfully it’s finally getting fixed.

Patch 1.04 for consoles and 1.05 for PC is expected to land this week, with CD Projekt Red’s Community Coordinator Marcin Momot posting an incomplete changelog of tweaks it will bring. The headliner of them all is the change to the text, which will supposedly be a little more legible after the update. The patch also brings some stability tweaks and a host of fixes to quests and niggling bugs – like not being able to get on Roach, for example.

  • Geralt will not longer interact with candles near chests and other interactive elements.
  • General stability and performance improvements
  • Significantly Enlarged GUI and HUD elements (including fonts) on consoles and slightly on PC.
  • Improved camera smoothness
  • Performance improvements during some cutscenes.
  • Fixed case where game was crashing on loading a save in certain situations
  • Various bug fixes and user experience improvements in GUI panels.
  • Fixed issue where some players were unable to run after Wandering in the Dark quest
  • Fixed issue where players were unable to talk to Eight after the Lord of Undvik quest
  • Too many wild hunt minions were spawned during Ciri’s Story: Fleeing the Bog quest.
  • Fixed issue where Keira could sometimes fall under terrain during Wandering in the Dark quest
  • Fixed issue where Player was unable to move freely during Blindingly Obvious quest
  • Fixed issue where Player was unable to activate portal during Wandering in the Dark quest
  • Fixed issue where Player could get trapped in Turseach castle ruins
  • Fixed issue where Roche was not present at Hanged Man’s tree during Eye for an Eye quest
  • Fixed issue where Player was unable to talk or interact with certain NPCs
  • Fixed issue where Sirens in quest Lord of Undvik could be invulnerable.
  • Fixed issue where player was unable to use certain actions after Carnal Sins quest
  • Fixed issue where Geralt was sometimes unable to mount Roach
  • Fixed issue where some players where experiencing infinite loading screen during King’s Gambit quest.
  • Fixed issue where Simun was not properly spawned in An Unpaid Debt quest
  • Fixed issue where player might have had a progression break after choosing certain dialogue option when talking to Dijkstra in Count Reuven’s Treasure quest
  • The Pyres of Novigrad quest is of course going to be fixed as well as the XP glitch.

The patch is expected to drop on PC by Wednesday latest, with consoles trailing behind thanks to certification delays. Regardless, you should be able to grab the update before the weekend rolls in – after which CPR will probably start cracking on remaining issues not yet addresses. Momot did stress that this log isn’t complete, and that the studio is trying to squeeze in as many fixes into one patch as possible. No one likes frequent updates.

But I am glad that one of the biggest issues that many have with the game is finally being addressed. It may not have affected me or you, but there are scores of payers finding it painful to play – and that’s just depressing.

Don’t you struggle with text either? I play on my 42″ LG TV and sit about 2m from the screen, those descriptions on the bottom left for weapons etc are fuck small. Maybe I’m just blind!

I’m glad for the first one. It’s minor, but still irritating to light a candle when trying to loot a chest.

After playing for around 20 hours I’ve only discovered one genuine bug: Initiated dialogue with a merchant camped on the side of the road, somehow a different merchant appeared when entering the conversation & if I selected view wares nothing happened & the conversation ended. A reload fixed it.

I actually had an interesting bug yesterday. Couldn’t open a door to a basement (which was the only way out). Turned out that the controller just can’t activate the door, no matter what, but pressing “e” on the keyboard did it 🙂

Probably. 😉 I also didn’t loot in houses, towns, etc. Only encampments and guarded treasures and the like. But then, whilst in Novigrad, accidentally took something from a chest, right in front of a guard (was looking – didn’t want to take). He, literally, farted… (was like **fart** “Oh, was that me?!”). That’s it… They get ticked off if you try to smack someone, but seem quite ok with stealing. So now my Geralt is a massive klipto – pretty much take anything that isn’t nailed down! 😉

I am colour blind. I can see all the colours, I just have a lot of trouble distinguishing colours that are close together, red, green, brown. Imagine how much I find Batman detective mode (Witcher Mode?)? I found an option to turn the display on the HUD, it is not easier. My wife walks past and says, oh there it is, the red footsteps, just follow them. Yeah, through foliage. She can see them easily, I struggle. Not fun. Seriously not fun.

Colour blind help or even just an easy mode with arrows or something.

Thank you for this warning, I almost bought the game this weekend. I am in the same boat as you, but found that most big-name games come with a colorblind option/mode. It is really disappointing that this game doesn’t have. Hopefully the developers will add it in the future, but for now I’ll stay away. It is too bad too since anywhere from 7 to 15% of people have some type of color-vision problems.

Nep nep tip for those who play with the MAP turned off. Flick the touch pad north and the map appears, click it to go back into the game. The HUD is too cluttered for a game that trumps the rest of the Industry in a thick immersive atmosphere. Nep turned the health bar to small and everything else is turned off.

I found my first bugs this weekend! Was fighting some rotfiends and suddenly fell into a rock and couldn’t get out. Also the bandit leader in one of the “person in distress” side quests near Hanged Man’s Tree didn’t drop a key, so the poor oke is still stuck in his cage.

Oh that reminds me. There was a bug when I rescued that guy from the cage. When I started fighting the bandits he was inside the cage, but after the fight he was somehow outside the cage, but the game still thought he was inside. I had to unlock & open the door of the “empty” cage before interacting with him.

So far haven’t had half of the issues on Xbox One that most people are complaining about, but the text size increase will help but it definitely isn’t as bad as most people are making it out to be.

            June 1, 2015 at 14:06

I get owned every time I go up against someone with a monster deck. I’m not quite sure what perks they have, but it always seems like they have 100 cars to play with and you only have the usual 10.

          • Rock789

            June 1, 2015 at 14:06

Yeah, I need to give it more attention. I know that if you get the AI to use a ton of cards in the first round, you’re almost guaranteed to win the 2nd and 3rd rounds. But it just ain’t easy for me. And I have far too much other stuff to keep involved in. The Bloody Baron’s storyline was freaking epic!! So many twists and turns to that story… Absolutely loved it! Got a few Witcher contracts I wanna focus on tonight, if I get to play.

          • Captain JJ the_scarrrr

            June 1, 2015 at 14:08

I loved that Bloody Baron’s storyline. That “thing” (don’t want to spoil anything for others) they had to give a proper burial. Eeek.
I’ve been focusing on Witcher contracts the last two days, but I’m running out of ones in my level scope now.

            June 1, 2015 at 14:12

Yeah, that was freaky, but really sad… A close friend of mine went through that (what happened to the wife – trying to give no spoilers) and it really hit home. Was tinged with a lot of sadness for me. But that’s what I love about this game – it brings out all the emotions in you! No game has done what this game is doing for me, since Mass Effect!

Same here. So engrossing! Even my gf enjoys watching when I’m playing Witcher 3 – she says the storylines are better than most movies out there… And that’s saying a lot. They truly keep you gripped.

Even some of the things peasants say when chatting to one another can hint at something. Was walking through a little village in Velen (near Oxenfurt) and heard 2 women talking. The one said “I don’t understand how the **insert name here** family are doing so well. They even have meat at the table for every meal!” So the other woman replied “I know. Those battlefields they scrounge around in for left over weapons to sell must be payin’ off for them… But they don’t have nothin’ but meat at the moment”.

I then clicked as to what they were talking about… o_O And that’s just an off-the-cuff remark made my a random, never-see-again NPC. This game has so much depth! Dare I say it… It’s a Skyrim killer?!

I think it might just be a Skyrim killer. I decided to give myself until 60 hours of gameplay to decide for sure, but so far it’s in favour of Witcher 3 simply because of the stories (there are so many great ones).
Skyrim had that incredible attention to detail that made it different, the Witcher 3 now has that too. Bethesda has their work cut out for them if they’re attempting an Elder Scrolls VI.

I’d say it is. Exploration is just as rewarding as in Skyrim, storytelling is so much better, combat is better, crafting is more interesting.

My only thing is that some of the crafting (not all) is a bit vague. I have NO idea where to find some of the stuff or how to craft it. So I literally sit for a few minutes, just scrolling through the “dismantle” and “craft” menus, teaching myself what I need for what.

I spent about an hour yesterday to find all the stuff to craft some amazing silver sword only to realize you need to be level 18 or something to be able to wield it. I was quite bleak haha.

            I’ve got a diagram for a lvl 37 one, and I’m only lvl 8 now. :/

It’s just laying there, torturing me in my inventory with that “+150dmg” all pretty in green.

This is probably the sword I’m talking about below 😀 I’ve now learned to look at the level requirement before crafting.
Is it just me or is 90% of the armour nowhere near as nice-looking as the set you start with?

            June 1, 2015 at 14:36

haha yeah my armour makes Geralt look like he has a boep!

Haha! Same here. Finally crafted a cavalry armour set when I reached level 14, now I look a bit less like an inkeeper.

I’m level 6 now. It’s because I have hardly touched the main quests. I just run around and look for question marks and side quests. Also what I love about the monster contracts is how they aren’t always monsters!

            June 1, 2015 at 14:39

I’m in Velen now, busy with the witch half of the main quest. and probably only half way through that I guess. I want to hunt down a few question marks but I’ve run into lvl 18 monsters doing that, and that’s a firm NOPE.

Happened to me as well! I held out long without taking damage and using Quen, but I hardly do damage to the monster. Then as soon as I mess up he klaps me one shot and I’m dead. haha!

            June 1, 2015 at 14:46

I keep forgetting about Quen. I tend to rely on Yrden, upgraded it a few times so it last a nice while.

            June 1, 2015 at 14:53

Aard for me mostly on humans. Igni on most monsters and Yrden on specters and such.
And I also tend to forget about Quen a little too often.

            June 1, 2015 at 15:10

Oh man I cant live without Quen. Also used Axii for the first time in…I think all three witcher games and it’s actually VERY effective agains certain monsters.

Dude. I had a smith in Novigrad craft me this insane sword. Needs level 37!!.
Now it’s in my inventory, weighing me down (both emotionally and physically 😉

            June 1, 2015 at 14:35

I needed emerald dust for the viper steel sword, but I couldn’t afford it. Now that I’ve actually found emerald dust I’ve got an axe with way better damage. Damn it!

That’s my strategy when playing. I try to string the AI along for as many turns as possible while keeping the score more or less even in the first round, then let it win. It usually only uses weather cards when it’s losing badly to counteract your cards.

            June 1, 2015 at 14:12

I try to “test” them, to see if it plays melee, ranged or siege weapons (they seem to be biased to one usually) and then I hit them with weather cards.

            June 1, 2015 at 14:16

Hmmm… That’s true. I think I should try that out. I usually waste my rubbish cards on the first round – let ’em win by a country mile, but they’ve now used 5 or 6 cards… So they only have 4 left for the remaining 2 rounds. But like I said – sometimes it works, but oftentimes not… Perhaps a re-think is in order.

The last game I played, after the first round it had 3 cards left to my 5, and 2 of those were weather cards haha. GOT YOU!

          • Captain JJ the_scarrrr

            June 1, 2015 at 14:19

Haha. I love that. When they play a clear weather card even when everything is clear. Then you know you’ve won. 😀

            June 1, 2015 at 14:20

Can’t imagine anything more embarrassing to your opponent than losing a round 1 – 0.

          • Captain JJ the_scarrrr

            June 1, 2015 at 14:19

It works for me. If they start hitting (for example) siege only, then you give them a weather card, play your melee cards and the next round they have to play whatever else they have left, and you can then hit them with siege. I always try to have one or two weather cards on me (one offensive card and one clear weather card). But it also doesn’t always work, but it’s worked the best so far.

Did you download the latest patch? That quest had a couple of issues that they fixed. I had an infinite loading screen.
