Many devs seem to believe that we’ll be seeing new console hardware from Microsoft and Sony soon – based on the very real fact that PC’s have grossly surpassed consoles in terms of visual fidelity. There’s been lots of talk of next-gen. Epic would like to see more RAM in the next generation. Ubisoft, for one, isn’t satisfied with current gen consoles. You know who doesn’t think there’ll be a next-gen any time soon? The Elder Scrolls folks at Bethesda.

"I think it’s going to be a while still, I really do. I think consumers are happy with the current ones, there’s a lot you can do with them," Bethesda’s Todd Howard said to PS3M . "So I don’t think it’s coming next year or the year after."

Bethesda, it seems, were considering waiting for the next gen before deciding to develop and release Skyrim for the current crop of consoles. "We want [Skyrim] to be fresh. We don’t want it to feel, visually or technically, ‘Oh this is Fallout 3’ or ‘this is Oblivion’ And if we couldn’t do that we would have waited," he said.

Irrational Games’ Ken Levine doesn’t think there’s much need for next gen right now. “At this point I have no desire as a developer and zero desire as a gamer to see the next generation come out where I’m sitting right now,” he said in a podcast. during the same show, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford said “I would expect that within four years from now, we will be in a new cycle of some kind, and there’s more certainty than there was two or three years ago about what that next cycle should look like.”

Sony has repeatedly said it has no current plans for next gen. “A question I often get is when we are going to see PlayStation 4,” Sony’s Jack Tretton said in an interview last year. “When somebody can craft the technology that exceeds what we’re able to do on the PS3, but we are still just starting to harness it.”

My head wants new shiny graphics and tech – but my wallet reckons I can wait a few more years.
