Next gen will never match High end PC’s

1 min read

While the chaps at Epic are convinced that the next generation of consoles will produce the sort of visuals we’re seeing on high-end PC’s, one of the PC platform’s more vocal champions Crytek has said that there’s just no way that’s going to happen.

Of course, when Crytek says “High End” they mean the sort of PC that nobody on earth actually has, and that consoles of the future will never be able to match the best hardware that money could buy.

"Without breaking NDAs that are in place, realistically, from purely a price point perspective, it is impossible,” says Crytek’s Cevat Yerli to Eurogamer.

"It’s impossible to package $2000-3000 into a mainstream, let’s say $500 console. I’m not saying they are $500 consoles. They may launch a console at $2000, but the consumer pricing is usually much lower than that.

"So, given consumer pricing, and given the cost of production of a gamer PC and the amount of watt of power it needs, which is like a fridge, it’s impossible."

He went on to say that with the way that PC gaming itself has changed, consoles will always have a harder time keeping up.

"If you look at PC gaming, that has changed also," he said. "The whole modular way you can design a PC today, with two, three or four graphics cards in them, and you can water cool them and overclock to infinity, that didn’t exist even six or seven years ago. You just bought one or maybe two graphics cards and then you were super enthusiastic.

"It’s very difficult to compete with that. People have these massive nuclear power plants standing in their rooms that will run your games really fast. It’s hard to compete with."

A $500 console will never compete with a $3000 PC? Thanks for the insight, Captain Obvious.

Editor. I’m old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time – they were capable of being masterpieces. I’m here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

  • Dean_12

    Is this guy for real?

  • Sir Captain Rincethis

Hahaha! This was like reading candyfloss. Of course a $500 console won’t compete with a $3000, nuts.

  • CodeScarwls

I think he is just pointing out the obvious that most people are forgetting.
Many people (including me) expected the new gen consoles to compete against high-end PCs.

  • Banana Jim

Graphics are a nice bonus, but as always it’s nothing without good gameplay, a decent story and excellent characters. It’s sadly something that Crytek still has to learn. They make pretty games, but damn are those games dumb and soulless.

    • Melasco

Agreed. Look, make no mistake, I’ve pre ordered my Crysis 3 last year already because I love a good mindless shooter, but the visuals don’t mean anything to me, and it’s the kind of game I play once, and then loan to everyone lol… Games would have been nice at a full PC level’s of graphics on my PS3, but would not have changed the amount of time I put into them by one second…

It’s like dating a supermodel that can’t talk to you about rugby, chess, games or food. It’s beauty with no soul.

    • mornelithe

More resources to use, doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be pushing graphics with it. Graphics are a tiny part of the overall package. Environment detail, AI, seamless game play, overall performance (view distance, frame rate, physics, the list goes on and on).

And I hate to be the one to point this out, but the jump from PC to Console, didn’t make Crysis better, it made it much, much worse 🙂

    • hardstyle

That’s why every generation when consoles come out the most hot topic is what’s inside the box i.e. HARDWARE, GFX POWER!!!! Do you see a pattern here? PC and console gamers share the same mentality and there is nothing wrong with it. Having pretty games is nice.

  • Admiral Chief Erwin

They should redefine the term “high-end-pc” to EFFINGMAXEDTOTHEMAX-PCs.

Joke aside, rather call them Ultra-spec I say

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Yeah, I think a PC can fit in to one of 5 catagories
      1) Low-end (for the moms and Sims players)
      2) Medium (For the guy who doesn’t care if the graphics are only semi ok-ish
      3) High-end (For the guys who like to play on high settings)
      4) Utlra-spec (The guys who want to brag about their uber frame rates on max

      • Banana Jim

Exactly most PC gamers I know are essentially playing games where the settings are essentially comparable to PS2 games (yes these people do exist). Mine is fine, probably just above xbox 360/PS3 (but at slightly higher framerates).

      • Brady miaau

Yeah, I have an OK CPU, fast memory, couple of big disks and a fairly crap graphics card. (home PC now, laptop has way better graphics)

I suppose I am and always will be medium on that scale and that is ok by me. The guy in my granny flat is in category 6 out of 5, I think.

Each to their own is the point

      • DrKiller

Sims is a bad example, it lags on any spec of PC 😛 haha

  • Melasco

What is the point he’s trying to make? This is common knowledge… Console’s are about what you can do with what you’ve got and it sets a standard so that developers can focus on building a game, and not on reasearching new hardware every 6 months….. They also help shield us from people like Crytek who will sacrifice the most important components of a game for better visuals….

We all know PC’s are more powerfull, and you know what? Console gamers don’t give a crap… If we did, we’d go buy PC’s…. sheesh… Get over it already..

I’m busy working my way through the Mass Effect Trilogy on PS3 AGAIN… Yes, it looks like crap compared to many other games, yet it’s absolutely amazing every time!

    • Banana Jim

I like you. You speak my language.

    • Wtf101

  • What exactly is the unit of measurement?because Ni No Kuni looks every bit as beautiful if not more than games on a PC set to max graphics .. I grow so tired of this arguments … Games are Games … why must everything be a competition? …

    • mornelithe

Competition breeds innovation, drives down prices, and generally keeps the market in check.

      • Agreed, to an extent. Console Games will never be able to keep up with the graphical power of pc’s, so why do we keep having these same kind of debates, this doesn’t push innovation at all. Why not compete with story or gameplay? yet we hear the same “Consoles sux, PC has better graphics” every single time, it’s getting old.

        • mornelithe

Um….of course it pushes innovation. Because developers work tirelessly (ok, some more than others) to continue to refine their engines and produce more from them. Just because the innovation doesn’t jump out from the screen and smack you in the face, doesn’t mean it’s not there. We gamer’s are often a thankless bunch, but we need to realize how much effort goes into engine refinement/code innovation.

And we’re talking about ‘games’ here, because the amount of games shared between all platforms far, far, far exceeds the amount of exclusives. So, it’s not a matter of consoles ‘keeping up’. It’s a matter of doing what they’ve always done. Create engines that can scale depending upon the hardware. Internal Devs are there for exclusives, 3rd parties don’t have that luxury…then again, 3rd parties generally make a bazillion times more on their successes, than console exclusives do (generally speaking, of course).

And really, games were perfectly fine last gen. And we’ve even had some great ones this gen, so I don’t really understand what you’re trying to say. You do realize that graphics have literally been held back for you know, years….because of the explosion in popularity of consoles. They can nickel and dime people to death on console…not so easy on PC. People assume there’s been this massive push for graphical acuity in games, however, even though computation resources have increased exponentially over that of 7 years ago, have we seen a game that jumps from last gen to Crysis 1 on a gaming rig, lately?

I’m confused though, who’s saying ‘Console Sux’, I don’t see that here. I see people being realistic about hardware limitations in a static environment over a period of time. That’s simply reality. To expect otherwise, is foolish. I do sympathize though, I’ve had no end of people run face about PC Gaming, take it with a grain of salt. Their opinions have no bearing upon your hobby.

      • Said it like a Baws, quad sli and physx card lots of ram and and and…… whats next.

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Isn’t Crytek’s games just very interactive benchmarking tools?

  • Deon Steyn

Does the 3000$ PC include a windows license?

  • Scruff304

We may mock this guy for being Captian Obvious, but lets be honest, there are some 13 year old dimwits who would actually expect next gen to be the same specs as high end gaming rigs, and then complain when they aren’t. Sometimes the obvious has to be stated…

    • Deon Steyn

They complain because they are 13 years old, like you stated. Mature people knows the obvious.

    • mornelithe

I know, right? People act like no one could ever be stupid enough to say that a new console could match a high end gaming rig. And the facts are, this is a claim made virtually every generation. Hell, I’ve had arguments on this very site, regarding the performance of consoles vs PC’s. And they still don’t get it.

  • Tbone187

Sometimes, certain things have to be said, no matter how obvious…Pls bookmark this article and use it as reference for the next PS/Xbox fanboy who has a lot to say…

  • mornelithe

PC offers more, plain and simple. Doesn’t have to be graphics, only people who lack an actual argument phone in the ‘Graphics aren’t everything’ tactic. Much like Fox News talking points, rather than formulate your own opinion, go with what you know has been talked about before. Right? Talk about it enough, and eventually you’ll become to believe it.

Consoles are a budget solution, for a rather expensive hobby. Expecting your budget solution to stand toe to toe with the expensive hobby, is silly…in ANY category. Well, except for paired down offerings, consoles have that locked up. Want to pay for MP? Voice Chat? Are you one of those people who hate Mods, and Server Tools? Hate aiming on your own? Want aim assist? Do you enjoy seeing a brand new game engine, run on 7 year old technology, set at low settings?

Then you Sir (or Mad’am), need to go out and buy yourself a console.
