The official launch price of the Nintendo 3DS was announced at a press-event last night at Monte Casino in Johannesburg.

Rumours had already been floating around that the incredible little glasses-less 3D handheld system was going to retail in South Africa for as much as R3500.

Can you believe that when the official price was announced, it was way different to what we were expecting?

The official price for the Nintendo 3DS at launch in South Africa has been set at R2799. That isn’t exactly pocket change and maybe it’s just that our country has gotten too used to accepting high prices, but we were all pretty impressed, also considering that it’s an incredibly potent system.

It will launch on March 25th and will come in two colours (blue and black). According to a press release received from Nintendo, the system will have 9 games available on launch day selling at a RRP of R499, they are:

  • Pilotwings Resort – Nintendo
  • Nintendogs/cats – Nintendo
  • Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition – Nintendo/Capcom
  • Super Monkey Ball 3D – NuMetro
  • Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Guardian – Ster Kinekor
  • Asphalt 3D – Ubisoft
  • Rabbids 3D – Ubisoft
  • Splinter Cell 3D – Ubisoft
  • Ghost Recon Shadow Wars 3D – Ubisoft

It doesn’t end there though, as a ton more games will be releasing not too long after, with the press release stating:

And that’s just for day one, a partial list of other titles coming soon to Nintendo 3DS includes: Steel Diverâ„¢, The Legend of Zeldaâ„¢: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64â„¢ 3D, Kid Icarusâ„¢: Uprising and new instalments in the Mario Kartâ„¢, Animal Crossingâ„¢ and Paper Marioâ„¢ series, all from Nintendo. Resident Evilâ„¢: The Mercenaries 3D from Capcom; Madden NFL Football from Electronic Arts,Crushâ„¢ 3D, Thorâ„¢ : God of Thunder, from SEGA; PUZZLE BOBBLE UNIVERSEâ„¢ from Square Enix, Co., Ltd; DEAD OR ALIVE Dimensions from Tecmo Koei.Europe Ltd. And James Noir’s Hollywood Crimesâ„¢ and Driver® Renegade 3D from Ubisoft. and Combat of Giantsâ„¢ Dinosaurs 3D from Ubisoft will be available across South Africa one week after launch of Nintendo 3DS.

We managed to get some hands-on gameplay time with a good bunch of titles, so keep an eye out for hands-on impressions of the system and more soon.

So there are the details folks. How do you feel about the price? Higher than you expected? Lower maybe? Hit us up in the comments below.
