Home Gaming Nintendo confirms ‘integrated’ next gen handheld console

Nintendo confirms ‘integrated’ next gen handheld console

Nintendo future

It’s not easy being Nintendo right now. Their stocks are tumbling, their profits are almost non-existent and no one is buying the Wii U. Once again, Nintendo is going to need to adapt to a new gaming climate. And the key to that evolution might be in the handheld market once again.

At a recent investor Q and A (via NeoGAF), Nintendo outlined their plans for the future.

When asked by an investor whether Nintendo was planning to take advantage of their strong handheld sales to create hardware that utilised next-gen tech with a portable focus, and if Nintendo was even able to afford such development, CEO Satoru Iwata responded with the following:

Last year Nintendo reorganized its R&D divisions and integrated the handheld device and home console development teams into one division under Mr. Takeda. However, because of vast technological advances, it became possible to achieve a fair degree of architectural integration. We discussed this point, and we ultimately concluded that it was the right time to integrate the two teams.

Also, as technological advances took place at such a dramatic rate, and we were forced to choose the best technologies for video games under cost restrictions, each time we developed a new platform, we always ended up developing a system that was completely different from its predecessor. The only exception was when we went from Nintendo GameCube to Wii.

However, I think that we no longer need this kind of effort under the current circumstances. In this perspective, while we are only going to be able to start this with the next system, it will become important for us to accurately take advantage of what we have done with the Wii U architecture. It of course does not mean that we are going to use exactly the same architecture as Wii U, but we are going to create a system that can absorb the Wii U architecture adequately. When this happens, home consoles and handheld devices will no longer be completely different, and they will become like brothers in a family of systems.

Still, I am not sure if the form factor (the size and configuration of the hardware) will be integrated. In contrast, the number of form factors might increase. Currently, we can only provide two form factors because if we had three or four different architectures, we would face serious shortages of software on every platform.

Apple has a common platform called iOS. Another example is Android. Though there are various models, Android does not face software shortages because there is one common way of programming on the Android platform that works with various models. The point is, Nintendo platforms should be like those two examples.

Too long, didn’t read? Well no worries, because the gist of what Iwata had to say, is that Nintendo knows that it needs to adapt with the times. Nintendo has a massive advantage when it comes to handheld gaming, having built an empire on three decades of Gameboy and DS systems, culminating in the current portable king known as the 3DS.

That’s something that has continued onto the Wii U as well with the massive screen of the GamePad controller. I love that controller. Hell, I’d pay cash for something similar to that device that allowed me to play 3DS games and more Wii U games when I’m on the go.

While that idea isn’t what Iwata and Nintendo have in mind, the idea of a new piece of tech with a far more adaptable operating system opens up all new possibilities.

Naturally though, that tech would need to be downsized, but a fusion is more than possible. Right now, I don’t think Nintendo knows how to leverage the Wii U console as a major player that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the Sony PlayStation 4 and even the Xbox One.

But they sure as hell can dominate the mobile and handheld scene if they went in that direction, something that I have no complaints about.

It does, I am always surprised how far forward they think and how much they squeeze out of a processor. People complain now that the Wii U is gimmicky with its game pad. I think in 10 years we’ll look back at it as the console that turned the living room into a cloud experience while Microsoft and Sony were chasing teraflops.

Just this morning i switched Pikmin 3 over to the gamepad so I could keep playing in the bathroom. Simply amazing.

I like what they are saying, this is a very intelligent move.
Let’s hope they open it up for indie dev’s and homebrew.

Ninty is a fav for homebrew so they should look at embracing it and allow a market of personalized products to form. The world has smart people that want to do things for your platform. So why not let them, it aint costing you a cent.

If Ninty can’t learn that from MC, Skyrim, GTA etc… then I dunno.

You get to play Nintendo games at 1080p, 30/60fps depending on the game.

Nintendo games don’t need that much power. Their games look great most of the time much better than 3rd party games on either of the other consoles.

See…Nintendo’s graphics are very simple, not much detail in their first
party games so it is easy to get 1080p games at 60fps. That being said
(and I’m just going to be realistic here) WiiU’s first party games may
or may not be fun but they still look like crap compared to PS4/Xbox One
games which are very visually demanding. WiiU is also very hard from
devs to code on which is why there is less 3rd party support than
PS3/Xbox360 or PS4/Xbox One. What do you consider WiiU? (7th generation)
Last gen console or (8th generation) Next gen console? because that’s
another problem Nintendo is facing, Identity crysis, no one can tell
whether it’s truely next gen or last gen. Most of it’s first party
titles play like last gen, the controller wants to feel next gen but
falls short, developers hate the controller too.

Remember, the Wii U was released a while ago, and though they have some graphic fidelity in most games, its easy to see why the newer consoles will vastly out perform the wii U on age alone. Thing is, Ninty doesnt do things for “best” gfx/particles/physx etc, they’re worried about interactivity and innovation whether its peripherals or games. They’re a much more “traditional” entity, dare I be so bold.

Yeah I get all that and the Wii U probably has the most “fun” games and is not trying to make a virtual real environment with lots and lots going on. The games seem to be suited to what the console can do and my question is do these games run well at a decent resolution? Xone on the other hand is trying to run games that are not optimised to it and is therefore suffering frame rate drops and resolution issues. Now in a years time maybe this will get sorted as developers have more time or it may not.

Well, I have to say – I absolutely love my Wii U Gamepad – for me it makes Wii U the best thing to have in front of your Massive HD TV – and the Nintendo Eshop is pretty tight and fab – it has taken some time to get up and running but I’m not looking for a PS4 or XBone as they are not needed as I am already playing 60fps in HD. . .

That’s no excuse, since the Wii and the DS systems Nintendo has been super behind in hardware specs. WiiU is 8 years behind in tech (maybe more). It’s terrible, the only reason why Nintendo can “trick” people into believing that Mario Kart 8 looks next gen is because Wii had graphics comparable to Gamecube. If the Wii had the same graphics fidelity of the WiiU 8 years ago, then the WiiU would actually be considered Next Gen to developers.

It does native 1080p games at 60fps (wind waker). The Xbone cant do that. But people are more than happy buying a bloody expensive console to run Tomb Raider at 30fps INSTEAD OF THE CHEAPER ps4 60fps version. 😛

surely you aren’t suggesting that wii u is more powerfulthan xbox one because that would mean you know nothing at all about any of this and shouldn’t be commenting. the wii u isn’t competing based on performance but on the nintendo library of fun casual type games. if you want to compare wii u to another piece of hardware for performance then you would be comparing it with xbox 360 and ps3. the wii u is on that level.

the reason for nintendo’s woes is that people jumped on the wii because of how different it was in terms of bringing a different experience that no one has really seen before. after the initial shock wore off the casual audience noticed their wii’s were collecting dust. nintendo is struggling with the wii u because they are markeying kid friendly games to kids who are enamored with tablets and smart phones and they just play stuff on those. the hardcore nostalgic gamers buy nintendo to re-experience their childhood favorites with an adde dimension but alot of us see the premium price tag and the weaker hardware and opt for more powerful systems and more adult games as a result. nintendo is in a place where they have to change the way the do things. no kore gimmicks like wii motes and tablet type controls and offer something with power to compete and a broader range of adult 3rd party titles, or a low price tag and more classics to buy. I happen to think nintendo should focus on handhelds because their games can run fine on those and just publish more graphically intensive games on the ps4 and xbox one and just abondon the console making business. I’m afraid they will always be viewed as the weaker hardware now

Nintendo do not listen. THEY NEVER HAVE AND THEY NEVER WILL!!! They always try to do blue ocean marketing. (Trying to find a part of the ocean that has not been swum in yet)

I bet you all a muffin that if Nintendo told us that the new Wii U will require a 24hour check in for DRM that no matter how the gamers screamed at them, that they would never have done a 180 like Microsoft did.

That’s just Nintendo. Now they want us to focus on Fitness. FCUK OFF NINTENDO, NO we did not ask for FITNESS SHIT. Just make a bloody mature ZELDA game to cater for the fans that grew up and out of your install base and stop only focusing on 8 year olds.

Your split market has killed you.

If your fitness model does not work out you can always go back to paper clips.

If they made Mario ect on Next gen consoles they would be saved. Or they should make a proper “gamecube” no more kiddie crap only, make it a powerful beast, that all the big devs will want to develop for it. Make more games like Zombie U and make Zelda for mature audiences as you said.

Hell release the original LoZ with updated graphics, they could make a fortune just by Re-releasing old school nesSNES/DS games on Android/iOS. I for one would play the crap out of them. Because they would be giving 30% straight off the top to Apple/Google, and the controls would be completely compromised, ruining the finely polished gameplay Nintendo is known for. If Nintendo ever did this, it would be the end for Nintendo as a major player in gaming.

Also, handheld wise, they are doing fine. Worst case scenario, they pull out of the home console market and focus on mobile, or like this article suggests, unify development across platforms and increase release frequency without compromising polish.
