We’ve been caught wearing our speculation hats, pondering the veracity of the information swirling in the rumour mill. At least one thing is known for sure now – and that’s that Nintendo does indeed have a new console up its sleeve. The company’s confirmed that not only will they be releasing a new console, it’ll actually be playable at this year’s E3.

“RE: Wii’s successor system: Nintendo Co. Ltd has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011,” said the company in an investor update.
“We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9 2011 in Los Angeles.” that’s the good news. The bad news? According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, it won’t launch until the 2012 Financial year – so we’ll be waiting until at least March next year.

According to current rumours the Wii’s successor, codenamed Project Cafe, will be an HD capable console that’s more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360, with a fancy new controller that’s got an embedded HD touch-screen interface. I’m pretty keen on a single system that’s capable of playing the latest HD marvel as well as Mario, Zelda and Kirby so consider my excitement palpable.
