Nintendo isn’t doomed, but the Wii U might be

Nintendo has revealed its quarterly earnings report (via neoGAF), and it seems that on the back of a weaker Yen and exceptional performance of its 3DS, the company is back in the black and is actually making money again instead of pissing it away. Hooray!

They’ve actually made significantly more money than they expected, netting 8.62 billion Yen, far higher than their expectations of just 1.3 billion Yen. Most of that is due to the weaker Yen, but also very strong sales of the 3DS which has shipped through 1.4 million units worldwide in the last 3 months, along with 11 million software unit sales. The 3DS shipments may seem a little low; but actual sales of the thing are on the rise, eating away at previous overshipments.

We all know that the Wii U has been doing terribly, but the earnings report shows us just how badly. According to the report, Nintendo shipped just 160 000 Wii U units worldwide between April and June. Of those 90K were in Japan, 60K in the Us and just 10K in the rest of the world, including the UK, Europe, Australasia and South Africa.

That’s shipped and not necessarily sold – so it’s possible that a number of those units are still sitting in warehouses and storerooms, unsold.

These sales are before the release of Pikmin 3, and there’s new first-party Nintendo game coming every month this year – but just how much that’ll change the system’s fortunes remains to be seen.

The wii u is going the way of the gamecube… 🙁 I’ve come to accept my superpower. Whichever Nintendo console I want, it always goes belly up. Which leaves me to think, I should have wanted a Wii.. 🙁

Maybe his super power ONLY works on Nintendo… but lets not tempt a chance of testing that theory.

You and OVG share that super power then. He loved his Game Cube and was enraged when it died. I know, one expects him to be subtle, calm and tranquil, but no, not when this happened 0-O Fucker is on leave now for 3 weeks so don’t expect to see too much from him.

Where Nintendo screwed up with the Wii U is lack of anything to play on the machine. At the moment the only two Wii U exclusive titles out worth playing are Super Mario Bro’s U, Luigi add on & Pikmin 3.

Monster Hunter 3 is there, but also 3DS so no real reason to have to purchase the WiiU.

Having said that we are getting games like Donkey Kong country tropical freeze, wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, X, Mario Kart and Zelda windwalker HD which are all big titles.

But still no new Zelda game, and when the console has been out for close a year soon with out even an announcement of it.

that’s why it’s failing, the console it’s self it great.

That and launch price was ridiculous

I honestly don’t get Nintendo. How can they launch their ‘new generation’ of console… And then leave it hanging like this!! I get that developers are waiting to see what happens before committing to making games for the WiiU… But when even Nintendo have a ‘sit back and see what happens’ attitude towards their own console… Then me thinks it’s time to move on.
