So the Nintendo 3DS is out and about locally, and as is the norm with most new hardware releases, people are finding bugs. The “black screen of death†is the current boogieman of the new handheld, but the name is a bit of a misnomer because it doesn’t brick the device; unlike the Xbox 360’s Red Ring of Death or the PS3’s Yellow Light of Death.
Anyway, Nintendo has responded to the complaints; they’re aware that there is a problem and they have a solution! Download the latest firmware update that was made available last Friday – like, duh.
Nintendo released the following recommendation to The Inquirer: “Our recommendations are that if anyone is experiencing any problems with their Nintendo 3DS console, we recommend that in the first instance they download and install the latest system update, now available online.â€
However, some users have commented in feedback posts that they received the black screen of death after they updated their 3DS. What happens next, Nintendo?
“If the problems still persist we recommend they contact their local Nintendo Customer Service centre to investigate the problem.†Which roughly translates to: “we’re out of ideas at the moment, but we’re working on another system update. In the meantime please feel free to pester your local Nintendo CS department or distributor even though you know as well as we do that they won’t be able to do a damn thing. This will waste both your time and their time, but give us more time to develop another firmware update. Kthxbye.â€
You might get lucky though: if you pester long enough they could cave and just give you a new unit altogether; worth a shot!
